Power supply for server

Hello OCN,

I'm looking for a ATX power supply for an Intel Server Board S5000PSL. I'll be getting a Norco 4220 4U chassis down the road, but Its still in the works right now. I have 2 of these boards and 1 will go into a 2U chassis and the other in the 4U. What concerns me is that the 2U psu i'm getting will have 3x 4pin 12v (for CPU) connectors and I am not able to find a suitable standard atx with these same quality's. Being a 4U, I will have 20 drives and I dont think the 500w i'm getting for the 2U will be sufficient. Does anyone out there have a suggestion as to a PSU that has 3x pin CPU 12v connectors that is above 750w? I think I mapped out 850w safely for: 20x 2TB, 1x QC 3.0GHz (maybe a 2x 1.86-2.xGHz QC later on?), 8GB, 3x 120mm fans, and some misc items. If anyone has any suggestions or if I've gone over on my watts, please let me know.

Thanks All,

Judging from the pics it appears to have EPS 12V (8pin Power) and 4pin ATX which most pSU's will have as a note.

not sure about 2u sizes for normal ATX PSU the HX750 and higher have EPS12V as i had similiar issues trying to find a capable PSU

What are you using the servers for? If it is for personal use then a nice Seasonic/Corsair/etc 750~1000 watt would be fine for the 4U. If you have a nice RAID card that does staggered start up then you might get by with 500~600 watt unit. Double check with the case.

For the 2U rackmount, you are stuck with whatever fits in the case.

Ok, I tried to test with a slightly older PSU and found that it only had 2x 4Pin for CPU an no other 4Pin 12v. So I just went ahead and picked up the 2x 2U PSU's I was getting either way. I'll use those to test with and decide on an 4U PSU at a later date... (when I can afford the next allotment).

Yes, this will be for personal use. I'm creating a home server environment for testing and practice purposes. The 2U PSU is a http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817147084 . Its a 500W iStar EPS PSU, it will power my one board (listed above) but with only 6x 4TB and 2x 500GB 2.5" drives. So power requirements are much lower.

Thank you both for your great advice. I'll keep a look out for more EPS power supplys. I'll also look in to Seasonic and see what they have to offer aslo smile.gif
