On topic, if we're supposedly to see completely new or completely refined architecture by 2015 (Excavator) when are we suspect to see Streamroller? Early or late 2014? As for changing sockets i think most of us suspected this would happen. Riding the AM3+ Chipset out this long was just well..stagnant.
Excavator won't be "completely new" or anything. Excavator is the next revision from Steamroller, much how Steamroller is a revision from Piledriver, etc.
We won't see whatever it is that AMD has planned to succeed Excavator until 2015 or later. Since Kaveri is hitting retail in early 2014, most likely there would just be a Steamroller APU refresh later in 2014, with Carrizo (Excavator APU) hitting sometime in 2015.
This editorial was a nice read, and it certainly makes it more evident that it's likely that AMD is ditching AM3+ in terms of processor output on it. I personally don't mind it. I will currently stick with my theory that AMD plans to make FM2+ their unified socket that they mentioned in the past, which would explain how high-end boards like the G1.Sniper have appeared for FM2+. There's nothing stopping AMD from bringing the FX series (starting with a Steamroller CPU) over to FM2+.
Still, AM3/AM3+ had a good run. As a general socket, it lasted a damn long time and it shouldn't really disappoint anyone if they end up having to buy an FM2+ board to get an octocore SR FX chip. Of course I'm just being blindly optimistic in inferring that AMD would even bring FX over to FM2+...
