I have an am3+ mobo but that chipset needs to die. I prefer to release it at FM2+

That's a no brainer. Of course I would do it.

Agreed and that's precisiely the point in addition to the fact many people still want to be able to pick discrete CPU/GPU combos. FM2+ has a place and eventually most people will be using APUs due to performance, value and lower power consumption - but that time is not now for the majority of PC enthusiasts. It may be just fine for entry level or mainstream PC users but not so much for PC enthusiasts who want to mix and match.

There is nothing wrong with the 990FX chipset. That's a discussion for a different thread however as noted above. If the FM2+ works for you, then go for it. There is nothing wrong with the FM2+ and you will get the Steamroller cores in Kaveri/FM2+.

Hm, my AM3+ mobo has an 880 chipset, so I think Steamroller isn't going to run in it, no matter what frown.gif

AM3+ needs to die. It is based on a chipset from 2008.

CD-ROM should die too. tongue.gif

AM3 chips will run on an AM2+ motherboard. I do not see why they could not release steamroller as AM4 that runs on AM3+ motherboards also. then they could release excavator on AM4 only. This is just speculation as I have never heard about any AM4, but I do know they said Steamroller would be the last to be released on the AM3+ socket.

I sure hope AMD moves on from AM3+. Socket has been milked long enough...

I'm more interested in it dropping into an FM2 socket rather than FM2+, but thats because I purchased an FM2 board recently rolleyes.gif

I'm trying to picture an 8 core CPU with a Titan glued on top of it. sneaky.gif

How much would that cost and how would you cool it?

For those who don't understand an AM3+ CPU will run on the 890 series mobo chipset but AMD recommends the 900 series to be able to use the faster DDR3 RAM speed and all benefits of the BD/Vishera and possibly Steamroller CPUs.

To repeat - there is nothing wrong with either the AM3+ mobo nor the 990 chipset. When a need arrises for a newer socket or chipset, then AMD will offer this. Some folks get bored and think you need to change things just for the purpose of change, which is not true.

Anyway the thread is NOT about changing the AM3+ mobo nor the 990 chipset. They will likely remain as they will work just fine with a Steamroller based CPU. The whole point of a Steamroller desktop CPU is so that it's a drop-in to the existing AM3+ mobo thus extending the useful life and increasing performance and value to AMD enthusiasts.

Keep voting, it's good to get feedback on a potential Steamroller AM3+ CPU.

MY vote option wasent there so I went for the closest thing.. my real answer would be "Yes I currently own an AM3+ mobo and I would definitely buy a Steamroller based desktop CPU to drop into this mobo IF IT'S PRICED RIGHT" haha But since OP gave us (fictional or close to rumor) guidelines "15% increase per clock perf. + similar pricing + 4.0 GHz. base clock +125w TDP it becomes kinda valid, but theres so many things about the CPU to consider other then that my biggest concerns about the AM3+ have always been about memory controller, the frequency difference I could run 2 sticks vs 4 is astounding and I needed more RAM at some point my rig felt non optimal. Oter things like max temps acceptable on it, or just how hot it runs generally come to mind, those are all considerations that make me think "even with the provided info on the chip, I'm not sure !!"
