Universal GPU block and VRM / VRAM temps

I did some tests on my setup to see what temps i got, havent found much in here about the use of universal GPU blocks so i thought i would share my findings. Running 2x MSI GTX 670 PE OC with EK-VGA Supremacy. Using Lamptron CW611 and OpenHardwareMonitor to read temps.

So, i put the Lamptron probes on the VRM and VRAM of both my VGAs to take some more measurements. The probes was put in between the fins of the heat-sinks. I must say im quite satisfied with my CW611, there is a lot of more options i would like but it does what i need it to do

Prefer to have stuff on manual control. The intent of this test is to get information on how my graphic-cards are coping with universal GPU block and custom heatsinks/airflow. Earlier measurements have indicated that the VRM of my top/master card is the hottest spot. From what i understand VRMs have working temperatures up to 125c.

I took three readouts:
1. Idle - Restart computer, wait 5 min with no programs running - Measure
2. Heaven - Extreme settings - 1600 x 900 windowed - 20min - Measure
3. Planetside 2 - High settings - 6020 x 1080 fullscreen - 25 min - Measure

VRM and VRAM temps are read from the CW611 at the given time, rest of the temps are max values from OpenHardwareMonitor.

Room temp is 25c.

______Idle___Heaven__Planetside 2
CPU_____32_____46_______65_____
MB1_____26_____35_______41_____
MB2_____34_____34_______35_____
MB3_____30_____36_______38_____

GPU1____23_____38_______43_____
-VRM____41_____91_______107____
-VRAM___29_____72_______75_____

GPU2____25_____39_______45_____
-VRM____38_____74_______93_____
-VRAM___28_____67_______69_____

The highest temp was as suspected the GPU1 VRM, peaking at 107c. Even though this is within the "operational temperature" i think its a bit high, but, what can you do... The noise from the stock fans are gone, so thats good

Guess ill just keep playing on and keep an eye on the temps of that VRM, it will last however long it lasts...

One thing that would help the VRM temps is to have a fan on the side of the case blowing air onto the VRM area. Even a slow speed fan will make a difference.

Bearing in mind your reading is from the heatsink it could be quite a few degrees higher on the VRM itself.

Hi there:) As for airflow i have made some adjustments to one of the cabinet fans, check my BUILD LOG. The temperature difference between chip and sink i dont think its too big, the probe is quite good in between the fins, however, i dont know anything about the *CW611 or its probes, could be misreading at high temps as well. Lamptron have no speccs on the temp measurements. I could put a fan directly over the VRMs, but im kinda trying to reduce fans XD

Eym8:)

These test were done with cabinet closed. Did a test like you suggested and found drop in VRM temp. Played Planetside 2 till the temps stabilised and ended at 87c for the hottest VRM. The fan was a 140 mm fan original with the 800D. For more details check my BUILD LOG, dont wanna make double posts

I bought a Gelid VGA PWM adapter then took a small PWM fan and mounted it above the VRM heat sink. I can't hear it and I set it to go 100% when the GPU reaches a temperature of 45C.

You would need to do some work of your own to determine at what temps to set it to go full blast but it will NOT work well with the stock fan speeds because at 45C they are expecting you to be at idle.

Very good idea on the PWM connection, will most likely use a 120mm fan and make my own bracket to fix it to the cabinet. Will try to see if it is possible to do without cutting hole in the window, hope so..

Did some more adjusting, now running Planetside 2 on ultra with VGA-VRM at 60-65c using a temporary 140 fan and door open.

Nice... see universal blocks are just as good as or better than full coverage as long as you have some air over the top of the VRM heatsink.

Update:
Bought another AF120 and mounted it with Velcro to the back-wall.

Notice the excellent fit between the fan and the tubing from VGAs, like it was ment to be

Ran Planetside 2 at 6020 x 1080 / Ultra. VRM peaked at 63c., CPU at 63c and GPU at 44c/45c with side panel closed, WIN.

Although i was hoping to get it to work without the extra fan, i now have excellent cooling/temps, no more worries
