Fluid leakage on backside of MB - Page 2

Alright! I took off the back plate and it's just grease from the thermal pad underneath that's spreading from use, so whatever the issue is, that's not it. I'm going to put it back together and test it again.

Yea,

Clean that stuff off if you can, and think of reapplying some non-electrically conductive compound...that's IF that heatsink is actually getting warmed up by your components...

There are two metal plates at right angles near the CPU socket backplate on the UP5 TH, and after looking a little more closely I realize they are there to stiffen the board near where you might hang a humongous air cooler off of it. Nice feature on this board! The grease is holding a bit of thermal padding in place and is completely harmless.

I also inspected the other PCBs on expansion cards etc, all looking good. So I started putting it all back together, one component at a time and checking the debug codes each time. I noticed that it throws the often-seen D4 error (PCI Resource Allocation) when I put the sound card (Soundblaster Z) into the first PCIe x1 slot, but not when I put it into the third slot after the GPU. In my case, the sound card has to live in the first slot though because of clearance issues, and I haven't seen any ill effects from that in practice - it's been in that slot since I finished the build a few months back anyway. So far, so good.

I noticed that the PSU was sharing the electricity outlet with a bunch of other devices, so I moved it to its own dedicated outlet in case the PSU was seeing some spikes from the shared outlet. Finally I re-flashed F11 onto the main BIOS, in case it had gotten corrupted somehow. I then ran the system without the GPU for about 2 days, and now with the GPU installed. Everthing seems fine for now, fingers crossed.

just fyi there is a thermal fluid in the heatpipes on the heat sinks of the MB's and cpus, and for that matter anything that has "heat pipes". The only reason i know this is because my friend decided to cut one open one day to watercool his north bridge and leave his south bridge unwatercooled. Needles to say it did not work as well anymore hahahaha.

Cool! I would have thought the business part of these pipes was the copper pipe itself instead of fluids or gases inside. I guess you never know until you take matters into your own hands coolsmiley02.gif

Anyway, I'm going to observe that greasy edge for a while and see if it changes. I think it may have been some funny business on the power lead that I had my PSU plugged into -- I had a power issue on an old laptop that was plugged into the same mains lead as the PSU exactly at the same time that I was seeing those shutdowns. Perhaps a faulty laptop power supply, and that may have caused some spikes on that mains lead. I'm going to need to test that laptop power supply some more.
