question about replace or upgrade on a 860 system.

I built my parents a computer a few years ago out of parts I had laying around:

Haf 932 case
blu ray drive
dvdrw drive
3 x 1tb drives (os, backup, media)
8gb ddr3 2000 4x2gb
ocz 600 watt psu
6830 or something AMD card (not the original card I had with the system just a replacement)
p7p55d asus mobo
Notctua heatsink and fans

A few weeks ago the computer went DOA and wont post anymore. Powers on and red light immediately.

My mom is a teacher and took it to their ''computer guy'' from school. He said it's the processor.

I can get a 860 and mobo for sub $150 if it comes to that.

Should I just keep the case, psu, memory and drives and go to micro center and get them a new haswell i5 and call it good? Or try to replace the cpu or cpu/mobo first?

They do email, music streaming, pics of grandkids, etc... nothing major.

I'd deal with this in person immediately if I wasnt 1000 miles away in the oilfield for the next few weeks.

Advice?

Is there any reason why they couldn't just use one of the dual core i5's? Such as the i5 650? Is it just because you can grab an i7 860 for cheap and it would just be the easiest option?

No reason at all. That would work fine as well. I'm just not trying to chase my tail any more than I have to, being that I don't know the guy my mom had look at the computer. They're willing to go get a mobo/CPU combo from micro center and swap that out too, but for what they use the computer for Im guessing that wont gain them much besides maybe 20 watts less power usage
