Thinking of painting my noctua D-14

Would it be possible to paint the actual heat sinks or would that possibly result in high temps?

I would think that anodizing would be okay, but I would not suggest grabbing a can of Krylon and going nuts...

Thermal conductivity of common paint is much lower than that of aluminium or copper, so I don't expect a coat of paint would be beneficial for a well ventilated heatsink.


On the other hand, a higher emissivity paint or coating should be beneficial for passive heatsinks, where radiation heat is much more relevant.







EDIT - Found this interesting experiment:

As expected the black (high thermal emissivity) painted heatsink cools way better than the natural aluminium (low thermal emissivity) heatsink under passive natural convection.

However under forced convection (active fan) there were no differences. This suggests both thermal radiation and insulation from the paint are irrelevant under forced convection.

Ah yes!
The Blackbird..
Leaked fuel all over the runway. Had to get airborne and warm up to stop the leaking, than fuel up. biggrin.gif
New York to London in 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds, that's 3,461 miles.... and having to slow down to a crawl to refuel mid-flight behind a KC-135a.
Return flight from London to Los Angeles was 5,447 statute miles in 3 hours 47 minutes and 39 seconds.. of course that included refueling and slowing way down so as to not break too many windows with pressure wave built up when being super sonic.
Top speed of over 2200mph and cruise at altitudes over 85,000 feet. Airframe is 300-500c when cruising.
