Call my pharmacologist for details. he's not cheap but it sounds like he might be able to hook you up. You know you want to build the radiator mod tongue.gif

I can't hear mine with the cover off and my head a foot away from the opening, and I've got a q9550 clocked to 3.4 under it. I can't push the fan over 900rpm or the temp over 65c with half an hour of prime95.

I don't doubt you, but good'nuf is good'nuf. if I had some 220w monster I might agree with you. At any rate with ITX it doesn't matter.

Ahha but a q9550 @ 3.4GHz is ... definitely not enough to push a H212 fan speeds but with Ivy it will. It's not soldered ya know wink.gif
And with haswell it's even worse

A decent Ivy OC is something on the lines of "4.5GHz" which will make a h212 really hot

seems odd though. Your favorite cooler there is 3 pipe, while the h212 is 4 pipe. Copper is copper, and aluminum is aluminum. The only thing your boy has is a higher quality fan. (fan on h212 is not super great. This is known) Unless that thing is 140 instead of 120 I'm at a loss as to why.

In any event my rule of thumb is any fan that gets above 1000 rpm is going too fast. It's physics. As a fan gos faster it's blade tips approach sonic speeds. a 120mm fan is ~377mm in diameter. It comes out to something like 14 miles an hour. You;re going to get wind noise. Clever blade designs can mitigate it somewhat by making the blades effectively slower at the tips, but even a 20% improvement won't buy you more than 1200rpm. The bigger the fan is the slower it has to turn to avoid this problem. A 200mm fan at 1000 rpm is doing near the residential speed limit.

O_O it's a 6 heatpipe. 6x6mm also it's almost 50% thicker on the aluminium side. H212 is only 4x6mm
Did you actually check?

2) That heatsink's fan is actually engineered for silence and is on a Gentle Typhoon league
