Helping My Buddy Build a Rig

Thread Starter
I have been out of the hardware game fora while, I'm still running a first gen i5. I started looking stuff up for him and realized I had no clue what was what anymore and it would be next year before I figured it out.

So I turn to you all. It needs to be from newegg and cannot cost more than 800. We would prefer to be in the 600 range though. It will be used for gaming on 1080p. His main game is Diablo, but would like to be able to play Bioshock and some games like that. So we don't need top of the line graphics, I was thinking a 660. My thoughts were 660 and mid teir i5 should allow him to play anything out, maybe not on max but with good settings. We want small form factor and case and we don't need windows. Just the meat and potatoes. He would also like an ssd. If its not possible please give any recommendation you feel is good and your thoughts.

Anyways have your fun guys and thanks smile.gif

Can you specify what parts are needed... OS? Keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor?

Also, are you open to an AMD build or do you want Intel only?

Those all look like solid builds. I stay away from AMD myself jsut becuase I have not used one since the athon xp days lol. I appreciate the builds, I think my buddy is going to have a guy he works with do it for him.

So don't do anymore builds for now. I will touch base. The guy had a 670 on the list I told him to switch it for a 7950 and I would help him oc it to save some money.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1420833&PrimaryItem=N82E16813128514

So far i'm pretty happy with the value of the FX 6300 vs my current 3770K and my old 3570K

The thing about Intel in the price range you're looking at is that the i3 isn't competitive in its price range, and the current i5's are overkill for almost all single video card setups. You could squeeze an i5 into your $800 budget, but you'd be cutting some corners elsewhere, and it really isn't necessary. For all but the very top-end video cards an FX-63xx series will do the job fine.

EDIT: I was just reading early reviews on the Haswell i3 line, and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with the gains over the previous-generation i3s. In particular the i3-4330 looks attractive with its 4MB L3 cache which appears to offer around a 10-15% improvement over the old i3. I won't go as far as to say that Intel has a definite winner on their hands at this price point, but the choice between it and similarly-priced FX-63xx series has suddenly become a lot less clear.
