Decisions, decisions... Buy cheap and wait for kaveri?

So I'm starting my third year of university and find myself without a laptop. I am a huge amd fan boy so I have been trying to find an a10 5750m laptop under 600... which I'm still open to do so long as the battery life is at least 5 hours and it's no larger than 15 inch. But I started thinking and realized kaveri laptops will probably be available before my second semester starts. So now I'm kind of thinking I should just get something under 400 and wait for kaveri laptops to hit the market. If I go the cheap route I want something that is super portable and has great battery life just to surf the internet with and do light note taking. I'm leaning towards a 32gig surface rt that comes with touch cover for 399 from future shop. Also from what I understand it comes with office.

Thoughts?

Ps I live in calgary alberta canada, and I have used the touch cover before, I'm fine typing with it.
Sorry AMD

I know you're a huge AMD fanboy and all but to be honest, you get more performance and better battery life with an Intel CPU + Nvidia GPU guiltysmiley.gif AMD's mobile CPU's are really just such crap, the only thing AMD can redeem its self with is having better integrated graphics performance than Intel. Even when Kaveri comes out, the chances of it being able to beat an Intel + Nvidia combo are very slim indeed. AMD still doesn't have their graphics switching anywhere near as refined as Nvidia and AMD's CPU's simply can't keep up with Intel, and that's a fact. AMD's mobile CPU's are so pathetic. Intel makes mobile CPU's that use much less power and get much more done. I am really not trying to bash on AMD, just trying to get through to you the facts in the mobile market right now.

If you are willing to spend $400 now and $600 later then you should just spend $1,000 now and get a good Intel + Nvidia combo. You can get a very capable gaming laptop in the 14"-15" range for $1,000 that has 6hr+ battery life. Any pure AMD system that you get for $1,000 will never be able to touch that Intel + Nvidia combo. I mean heck, you're better off with an Intel CPU and AMD GPU than you are with AMD for both. And no one makes AMD CPU with Nvidia GPU combos (nor would they want to even if they could, those AMD laptop CPUs really are crap)

Ugh, I didn't make this thread to start an amd vs intel. I don't care if an intel performs slightly better in benchmarks.

The a10 is somewhere between a i3 and i5 and I'm fine with that. The power consumption with the a10 is way better than going with an intel + nvidia and it performs as well as a intel + gt640 iirc in most games.

I don't plan on doing crazy rendering or or competitive benchmarking with my laptop so I don't understand why it needs to have so much horsepower.

I plan on watching some youtube videos, netflix, facebook and some gaming here and there when I'm away from my desktop.

The power consumption of a10 richland is the same as an i5 ivy and I see kaveri only improving on that. Not to mention the a10 has a wayyyy better igp.

To conclude, for under 600 dollars having the performance of intel + dedicated in games and longer battery life than intel + dedicated. It's a no brainer for someone on a budget.

Oh and I bought the hp 11z-e000 touchsmart with amd's temash for 350 bucks. 7 hours of battery life after setting a few power profiles on a 3 cell battery that charges in like 30 minutes. perfect for my needs. Just wish I could fiddle with the voltages biggrin.gif
