confusing: I get higher fps when i decrease external clock speed

first and foremost, merry christmas to all!

on to my agenda: my setup is a 1) abit ab9 pro motherboard; 2) intel core 2 duo 6300; 3) 1 GIG kingston dual channel pc 4200 (533 MHZ) RAM; 4) Win XP SP2

I'm completely new to overclocking. reading through bunch of material, the consenus is that you have to increase Extclk setting in the abit uguru software to achieve overclocking. so far do i have that right?

again based on bunch of material on the net about stable oc'd settings, i oc'd my pc to 1) increase Extclk from 282 (which is the normal setting) to 400; 2) Vcore to 1.4; 3) ddr2 volt to 2.2

ran cpu-z to check cpu speed, and yip it was 2.8GHZ which is compared to 1.86 when not oc'd. you'd think that's good?! but when i run FRAPS while playing F.E.A.R to see if i'm getting increased FPS, to my disbelief FPS went down! When i change abit uguru back to Normal, fps goes up! in fact, tinkering with the Extclk, when I changed it to 185, even though CPU-Z shows cpu speed of 1.2ghz, the frame rates both in F.E.A.R and Rainbow Six Vegas went up.

Can anyone please shed some light on this? How can that? I know it's a long post, so I want to thank in advance to all you read

Throttling/Instability causes this.

sorry for being newb, but what's 'throttling/instability'?

what's your suggestion for stable oc settings, you have my configuration? i want to see increase in frame rates. Thanks man!

How bad is the frame loss? ~1 FPS, ~10 FPS, ~30 FPS?

Also, what video card do you have?

Throttling I suspect is overclocking the CPU too fast, as in not slowly raising the FSB when overclocking. Instability means, of course, that the CPU is not stable, therefore lowering frame rates.

[QUOTE=Lt. ColdFire;1565137]How bad is the frame loss? ~1 FPS, ~10 FPS, ~30 FPS?

Well abit uguru has 3 factory settings: Quite, Normal, and Turbo. These 3 settings cannot be changed. So when i change to 'quite', my frame rate in F.E.A.R is:
Quite Normal Turbo User1
ExtClk speed :272 282 293 400

Frame rate in
F.E.A.R :31 30 29 21

my video card is evga 76000gt PCI-E. i thought that with the factory presets of Quite, Normal, and Turbo would be stable and that i should see increase in frame rates. but what you're saying is that even the factory preset settings are unstable, because from Quite to Turbo i see increase in frame rates?

I don't really know what you're talking about, but I'm talking about the CPU being instable, not the graphics processor. Lowering the FSB may fix that? I don't know, but here's a bump and maybe someone more knowledgeable on this will reinforce your efforts.
