Should I upgrade my CPU or GPU first?

After making a thread asking if my Athlon II x3 450 3.2 GHz ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103886 ) would bottleneck my Radeon HD 7770 (which I'm upgrading from a 6570 to), I'm getting torn between which I should get first. Should I just OC and unlock my 450 or get a whole new CPU and upgrade my graphics card later? I play Skyrim, Planetside 2, Tribes, Garry's Mod, and Mechwarrior Online a lot. I have no idea which one is higher priority and I'm getting either one very soon, please answer soon biggrin.gif

In my opinion, the best AM3+ CPU at the present time would be the FX 4100. Unlocking your Athlon II is hit or miss and the overclocking performance gains won't be worth the risk. Your GPU should be fine depending on the resolution you're playing at. 1680x1050 is probably your best bet with Skyrim, but the others should run fine at 1920x1080. The FX 4100 is sold out on Newegg right now, hence why I linked Tigerdirect.

I would wait until the Steamroller fpu's are released, in the interim you can overclock your CPU.

Apart from that, AM3 are the best value at the moment. Theres the fx 4130 & 6100 which are both great value and will be enough to push your CPU.

Above that, or if you don't want to overclock there's the i3-3240 & i5-3350P down intels route. These will obviously be more expensive.

All it comes down to is how much you're willing to spend.

title changed to be less misleading

I don't think any of the titles you have listed are CPU bound, so the obvious upgrade would be GPU first if you ask me.

Should the GPU be my biggest priority after that?
EDIT: woops, meant CPU

Well generally you want an upgrade path to be GPU, then CPU, then GPU. So chances are, depending on what you play, the CPU will be next on your cards.

Bare in mind also, simply getting another GPU to crossfire is not necessarily 2x the performance, not every game scales as well and if you do end up hitting the wall with limited Graphics memory (like I did) then having 2x the same GPU isn't going to help.

Okay, but if I upgrade to a 7770 will it increase FPS in games a lot? If Planetside 2 is CPU based I won't get any FPS gain, will I?

If youre strictly talking in terms of gaming, get the best GPU you can afford. Then overclock your CPU as much as you can and start saving up for a better one. The GPU is going to make the biggest difference and even with an Athlon II, youll still get better frame rates with a much faster GPU than you would by getting a faster CPU and keeping your same card. A 7770 isnt that fast of a video card so I dont think an overclocked Athlon II would bottleneck it that much anyway. So yeah, GPU all the way.

Fx series of cpu is pretty much the best bang for your buck

if i would had to choose i would grab the FX 4x00 or the FX 6x00

GPU wise personally i would prefer the GTX 650ti boost over HD 7770 but if its not in your budget then grab the 7770
