led wiring

Thread Starter
i have 8 1.5 volt leds off of 2 case fans that i want to mod to put in a case. Now im wondering if i wire them in series off of the same power source will i need a resistor. Im planning to run them off of a 12v rail for the dvd drive

Yes, you'll need one, since the rails of the 12v molex line contain only 5v and 12v lines. You can buy resistors this way for fans, but they often feed the fan 5v rather than 1.5v, but if you know what you're doing, I don't see why the latter would work, provided the resistors themselves do not burnout from too much heat.

So you are wiring the leds (all 8 in series) separate from the fans, yes? if so I'd say/recommend use a 1/4w, 1ohm resistor. If you don't want to buy or find one you should be ok without. With 12v from the source and 8 1.5v leds it isn't necessary, but a current limiting resistor is always ideal. Lowering the amps going through the leds will increase their life - and i'm guessing that the fans were used for a while before you started on this mod, so more life will help.
What fans are they from? I love antec tricools w/ leds but after a year or so there's a noticeable difference in lighting.

And just an fyi, if you ever make led circuits for a car/etc note that their "12v" battery is charged and supplemented by the alternator - output could be 15v. Which makes me wonder about packaged led circuits designed for cars and rated for 12v.
