New ways to test a new HD?

I need to remember (probably relearn) how to test a new drive and make sure its good the second its delivered. I want to do this before I order it, to make sure I know what I'm doing so I don't have a problem and possibly miss the store return window if there is a problem, so I'm holding off on ordering the drive until I know exactly how to test the drive. Back years ago the only way I knew how to test a drive was to load Seagate, Maxtor, or WD software onto a thumbdrive and boot from that and wait for my system to finish testing and scanning the drive before I could use my computer normally again. Are there any modern programs these days that you can just run from windows that will do a great job? I got stuff to do, I don't want to wait around for my system to slowly check a drive. This isn't for the OS system drive, just a storage drive. Any suggestions?

I use the software from WD to test my drives when I get them. I think most manufactures have windows software and software you can run outside of windows to test. Just take a look at your HDD manufactures website.

For example, this is Western Digitals tool.

Ugh... I didn't even bother to look at Seagates site. Looks like things have really changed since the last time I checked out their software. Dammit, my bad.
