690 with my system?

Hey guys, thanks for reading and helping out.

I've found a GTX 690 4GB I want to buy for my system to replace my 660's, but will my system see any benefit from it?
Will I need more ram or a better CPU to really see the full potential of a 690?
Is it still worth upgrading anyway?

I was going to go for 2 670's @ 4GB each or 2 680's at 2GB. But I thought I'd be better off with a 690 with space for another in a year or two if and when it's needed.

Games I play are Total War Rome II, Total War Shogun II, PlanetSide 2 and pretty much anything that looks pretty that's new out.

Thanks again for all your help and opinions, I'll be on all night (07/09/2013) trying to sort this decision out so I'll be replying fast.

My system is at 4.4GHz, not 3.5GHz.

This comparison will require a little bit of extrapolation; if you compare the performance of a single 660 versus a single 680:

You can see that the 680 offers a sizable performance bump. Now, assuming in SLI a pair of 660's and a pair of 680's have similar scaling (they don't, but just for arguments sake), it stands to reason that you will notice a good increase going with a 690. Whether if the 10-30% performance increase is worth it, is entirely up to you. wink.gif

With that said, going with a 690 will not require an upgrade in CPU or RAM. On the Ivy Bridge platform, your CPU is really as good as it gets, so there really isn't anything to upgrade to - unless you mean Haswell; but the gains you will see is so slim, you would be hard pressed to notice the difference. However, if you do plan on adding a second 690 down the road, I would suggest upgrading your PSU to a higher quality 800W+ unit.
