Out of curiosity, let's say your motherboards onboard sound is absolutely faulty and doesn't work, will a sound card OR a usb headset produce sound?

Yes. Better to do some troubleshooting and make sure it is dead though.

the realtek driver might crashed or went corrupt
try reinstalling or just update the driver

Mine is not dead but my mic has been having issues. My onboard mic sounds EXTREMELY quiet even at max settings. I plugged in my sound card and it STILL sounds the same, albeit a bit better, it's not the mic either. I was thinking perhaps the onboard sound can affect your soundcard or something but judging by the answer of my question, they're completely independent of each other
