OP i would love to see Intel come out with 6 and 8 core cpu for mainstream platforms soon maybe like in 2 years but that does not seem likely. A safe bet would be 4 years in 2017 or so. Prices will have surely come down enough for such cpu to become mainstream amongst general consumers and gamers. As of now there is no need for a mainstream platform 6 or 8 core cpu.So i say 4 years is most likely. But by then AMD would have already jumped on 16 core cpu's lol.

Yeah, AMD always has more cores than Intel. Years ago, they launched the first 6 core processor for Desktop and Intel hasn't done the same thing on their mainstream platform biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif.

Intel will never 'abandon' the market, they are still rolling out improvements specifically for the mainstream, keep in mind that lower power consumption is a hangup that the majority have, they are fine on lower power consuming platforms because they don't want their surfer to draw more power than their refrigerator.

Intel CPUs already won the mainstream-performance market with the 8-thread offerings (vs 8-Core on AMD side) so until AMD rolls out mainstream 12-core CPUs there is no need for them [Intel] to make their current Hex core CPUs any cheaper as there isn't any competition as it is

Look at the roadmap before you say anything, they have already dropped any future platforms for desktop
Besides, Intel is always more expensive than AMD is.

Buy a second hand I7 980? Theres very little difference between a 980x and 3930k. When more than 4 threads are supported in a game, it easily outperforms later generation quad cores too. My 980 can clock to 4.5 Ghz, but gets a little too hot still for the best air cooling I can give it, so up to 4.4 on air or 4.5 on water is doable.

Like everyone says - AMD already has 8 core processors out...

As for intel: 3930k is top end mainstream. If oyu're asking when it will become "standard" mainstram, maybe with Skylake?
@Dave I suppose my perspective may be skewed. I just now am upgrading my 3.8GHz Q8300 setup to an i7 920 this week so by the time i'd be updating to the current high end platform the desktop segment may be revitalized wink.gif

Guess it all depends if I get a raise and pay off my loans though haha
