I can assure you mantle does make a difference I already done testing on BF4 mantle gives 10%+ increase in FPS over DirectX 11.2 on win 8.1 64bit dont ask for proof I cant legally give that out and honestly am not supposed to be talking about it at all but Mantle API does make a big difference I tried on same system regular vs Mantle and as I said 10%+ increase the games that will support Mantle will give you option to run with it or regular directX11.1-11.2 and so far only AMD Radeon cards with GCN achitecture can run mantle.


and you said might upgrade to a 7870 go for the R9 270X it is a upgraded revision of hd 7870ghz edition with same or slightly higher clocks and brings slightly better performance and can even crossfire with a HD 7870 and is also GCN architecture.

R9 280X = HD 7970 GHZ edition and the 280X is actually cheaper and slightly faster than the 7970GHZ edition
R9 270X= HD 7870 GHZ edition and the 270X is actually cheaper and slightly faster than the 7870GHZ edition

I also want to point out I5 4670k plane quad core vs AMD FX 8350 8 core 4 modules both at 4.4ghz all I could get the haswell to safely / stable with 2x 7970's in BF4 beta the 8350 ran game better. I disabled my 3rd 7970 for the comparison and well the 4670k was struggling in BF4 beta with CPU usage spiked to around 90%+ at times also stuttered and was choppy and the 8350 was only getting 60%-75% CPU usage and played buttery smooth and BF4 was utilizing all 8 cores so facts are quads for future are not performing near as well as 4+ core processors from Intel or AMD in alot of future games.


I also want to point out the 8350 had higher average FPS and alot smoother gameplay so facts are the reign of the quads is going the way of the DODO bird future is heavily multi threaded with also heavy multi threaded rendering involved look at WARFRAME free to play game it gives option for multi threading and multi threaded rendering which gave me a solid 25 average FPS increase by using them. also from my understanding quads like an I5 dont handle the multi threading / rendering well in warframe but the I7 loves it with hyperthreading off it performed exactly like the I5 again future is 4+ cores not quads from either Intel or AMD.

I also want to point out planetside 2 is working on a patch to bring better multi threading on CPU's upto 32 cores along with multi threaded rendering capable of the same so do the math future looks to be IPC or single thread performance will not be so important as number of cores / multi threading / multi threaded rendering is the future.http://www.polygon.com/2013/9/14/4729926/planetside-2-devs-working-to-speed-up-play this link has video and in depth explanations so watch videos and such to help understand http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/09/25/an-unexciting-video-about-optimising-planetside-2/ or if dont like that link direct youtube link to the videos I am referring to yes I know several videos but is very interesting to watch and understand whats the plan and future and this is what alot of the future games are also doing.

I want to point out in the videos below they talk about the addition of way better multi threading and multi threaded rendering to increase draw call rates and even physX collision modifcation and tweaks to make physX multi threaded.

physX was limtied to first 2 cores / game was limited to first 3-4 cores / rendering and such was limited to first 2 cores so them making it be able to utilize all cores upto 32 cores will be of great improvement and will increase performance as they said in videos over 50% increase on some hardware likely the 4+ cores and even more likely on 8 cores and above. I will say of which is very substantial given alot of people running quads Intel or AMD can barely play the game on anything above lower - mid settings now once patch is released there will be a major performance increase even for quads of around 25% because rendering and physX collisions and such will be allowed to be done on any available core.

well quess what I was right on the planetside 2 thing they released the first performance patch this morning increasing multi threading and also adding multi threaded rendering. there are 3 performance patches to come from what information I have found and heard from family / friends in the game dev world these are all thanks to the R&D that them trying to make consoles also be able to run and play with PC's cross platform which they found they cant do but are still implimenting the performance upgrades.
