Is modern gaming on this 4 year old AMD system possible??

(Edit: it is actually from 2009!!)

Ok so I have this PC system that I inherited, I plan on using it for another year or two as my only system before upgrading to/waiting for Haswell Extreme. I'm trying to see of it could handle a modern GPU and thus some modern video gaming, or if I would be bottlenecked in a severe way.

ASUS M4A78-E AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131368

North Bridge
AMD 790GX
South Bridge
AMD SB750

And it has this CPU:

AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor HDZ720WFGIBOX

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649

It seems to run windows 8.1 ok, a bit sluggish here and there compared to the best out today but I think that an SSD would help with that (it has a 640GB WD Black at the moment). DDR2 800 Ram is maxed with 4 slots filled with 6GBs (1GB x 2 and 2GB x 2). 650w Corsair PSU.

I just want to know if I get a modern GPU and play a Bioshock Infinite level of game or perhaps Batman Arkham Origins.

The PCI expansion slots:

Expansion Slots
PCI Express 2.0 x16
2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16
(Single x16 or Dual x8)
PCI Express x1
2
PCI Slots
2

I forget is PCI 3 backwards compatible or not?

It should be able to keep up with most games if you can unlock a forth core and overclock.
And if you want more performance, you could buy some DDR2 with tight timings and a fast clock.

PCI-E 3.0 will work on PCI-E 2.0 without any problems.
That CPU will bottleneck a modern gaming GPU, unless you buy so far down the performance line that the $:performance ratio is horrible. Your best bet would be to look on the used market for something better matching like a GTX 460 or 465 and put some money away for when DDR4 mobo's come out in about a year.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't unlock and overclock that thing as much as you possibly can though.thumb.gif Just be sure to keep the system balanced

PCIE 3 vs PCIE 2 provides no benefit on our best cards.

OCN ref to HWCanucks article:

And for gaming, I think it would do fine like the one fella said, with a gtx 460, youd be able to run games. CPU is concerning, but check out some tests of it on more modern games. I'm sure you can find tests.

WOD is incorrect. You're going to be fine. Slap a $100-200 upper-mid-range GPU in there and you're going to rock in most games. Now there are some CPU-bound games where you're still going to have some problems Batman: Arkham might be one of these. But for most games you'll be enjoying them with no problem.

Yup throw in something like a 7850 and you will be good atleast for a year or two or get a used one for cheap.

You should be good.

I was using a Phenom II x4 945 with dual 5770's for a good bit. I was able to play BF3 fairly fine. Had some crossfire issues, but you should be good if you by a single decent midrange GPU.

It will be fine, but in games like Battlefield 3 where the game really likes more cores you will find that the CPU is holding you back. You could try to unlock the 4:th core for some extra performance, but gaming is definitely doable on that system with a decent graphics card. A HD 7790 or a GTX 650 ti should make that a fine gaming computer.
agreed with others... invest in a decent CPU heatsink.. like a hyper 212+ that offer great bang for buck. throw on that with some new thermal paste, overclock it 500mhz to 1ghz over base.

Add a decent GPU, gtx460 or 7770 or whatever you can find on CL or ebay that offers a 'good deal'

You'll be fine then. No reason to upgrade your RAM for the minor gains you'd see.

Yup, a 7850 or even a 7950 with as cheap as those things have been lately!

As the others have said, put on a decent heatsink and fan, and OC the snot out of that process. I had a few of them back a couple of years ago, they all unlocked to quad core, and they both took a 1Ghz OC on air with no problem.
