Titan SLI or 780 Tri SLI for 2560x1600

Hi all,

To be quick, I'm that idiot gamer that has to play with every setting on max. I play on a 30inch 2560x1600. I won't be using more then just this monitor to game either.

Price wise, 2 titans will cost the same as 3 780s. The issue that is confusing me is VRAM.

I want to future proof my computer for the next couple years when it comes to playing these new gen games. I heard they'll require a lot more VRAM then current gen games.

Would 3gb VRAM last me a long time on the resolution I am playing? Or should I get the titans. The 3 780s would be faster, but I dont want to hit a wall in 12 months because a particular game eats more then 3gb VRAM...

What should I do?

Hmm, I have done a few tests by monitoring VRAM usage on some games.

2560x1600p

Skyrim with AAx8 ASFiltering x16 and NO mods - 1800mb VRAM being used.
Skyrim with AAx8 ASFiltering x16 and about 15 active mods inc texture packs - 1980mb VRAM being used (im assuming it caps at that).

Skyrim with AAx0 ASFiltering x0 and about 15 active mods inc texture packs - 1200mb VRAM being used.

ARMA 3 with SSAO Very High, FSAA x2, FXAA High - 1500mb VRAM being used.

I would think the 3gb 780's would be fine for good time still. I've only hit my 2gb limit on my 670 once in Crysis 2 but that was at 5960x1080, which is ~57% more pixels than 1600p.

If you're talking about future proofing for the next "couple" of years, say 2-3 years ... then I think TWO GTX 780 or GTX Titans in SLI would probably do the job. That third card may add another 15-20% net performance gain in games that take good advantage of SLI, but it will definitely add 33% more heat to the system in every case, and there is precious little room between the three cards. Fan speed profiles and case noise will be substantially higher with three cards unless you water cool them.

3GB of VRAM is plenty for all current titles, and probably for the next 2-3 years as well. Yeah, the next generation consoles will push VRAM requirements up a bit .. but remember there's a crap ton of 1.5GB and 2GB cards still out there, and they're going to be playing those titles too. =)

If you do any scientific/compute work, the Titan runs FP64 at full speed, and the GTX 780 runs it at 1/24 clock speed. It won't matter for 99.99% of the Titan owners, but if you run 3DSMax or Solidworks, etc., it makes a HUGE difference. I thought I'd toss that in there - it's one of those "features" NVidia built into the Titan to justify the substantially higher price. Titan's not aimed squarely at the gamer market, but it does game well.

the only graphic game coming beside bf4 is whicher3 and that's 6+months away=new series from nvidia
buy 780 sli and oc them...if you need more(which really you should max every game 60+fps)you can add another

Well I game on 7680x1440 (Nearlly three times your resolution) and I barely can hit the 3GB vram limit on any of my cards and even then with AA (which you don't need tongue.gif).

In my honest opinion.... is as follows... Buy Two 780s and Water cooled them.

So in the future when you want to upgrade you will have your WCing kit ready and just change cards with waterblocks and gain all benefits of water cooling.

Oh yah... Anything over 2x780s at that resolution is overkill... You don't need to max AA.... I can't even see the difference between 2xAA and 4xAA. rolleyes.gif
