Unable to overclock past 4.0 GHZ. issue with MB

I currently have my PH 955 at 4GHZ @1.48V and wanted to push it a bit further. So i pushed the voltage up to 1.54V and put the multi to X20.5. When I booted back into windows I saw that in CPU-Z the speed only stayed at 4.1GHZ for about 5 seconds after windows booted, and then reverted back to 4 GHZ. The voltage did not revert back and stayed at 1.54V. I thought I might have been tripping some kind of Power distribution load sensor or overloading the VRM, so I put the voltage back to 1.48V and kept the multi at 20.5. The same scenario happens with 4.1 GHZ showing on CPU-Z only for about 5 seconds after the PC boots, then reverting back to 4.GHZ. However, in CPU-Z under the Multiplier setting it shows as: X 20.0 ( 4 - 20.5 ) so it is registering in the bios. All CnQ settings are off, as well as any other settings that might attempt to throttle the speed of the PC. The bios I am running is a UEFI BIOS with an MSI A970 G46A. I have an additional 90mm fan on the CPU VRMs, which, contrary to the issues other users are having, I have NEVER had an issue with the VRM load on this MB; also, I don't believe booting the PC would cause the VRMs to be stressed at all, since there is only a medium load on the CPU for a short amount of time. I have an additional 90mm fan on the NB (I run this at 2600MHZ). My power supply is also adequate; a ThermalTake 750W SMART series. Anyone have any idea why the CPU is reverting back to X20?

Well that cheapass 4+1 power phase mobo just doesn't like the load that the Phenom puts on it.

he is right according to this, http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboards-vrm-info-database your mobo only has 4+1 VRM phase you probably lucky it hasn't caught fire yet.

Don't overclock much or at all on that mobo. For how long have you been overclocking on that mobo? Download cpu z v1.59. Some have bugs. With v1.61 it showed various different cpu speeds except the right one tongue.gif

That looks like a useful chart. Thanks everyone for the help. I have been running at 4 GHZ on this MB for about a year with no problems. Part of the reason is probably my open case (bench case) and the fans on the MB VRMs. I will keep an eye on the Temps for the VRMs and be careful with it until I can get a new cooling solution or a new MB. smile.gif

Well you already knew enough to cool the VRMs i'd go a step further and make some heat sinks for the VRMs and use some AS5 glue to attach them. i usually make my own out of old north bridge hand video card heat sinks by cutting them down.
