It would be lack of hardware support. 10/100 is fine in a house where most everything is wifi, but if multiple gaming PC's, you should go for GbE.

If you're not into open source firmware, that dir-651 may perform admirably and for a good price, but if you're wanting to do more, and not interested in 5GHz wifi etc, I'd suggest looking at the buffalo WZR-300HP. It's $55 on newegg, standard N wifi, GbE, but the best thing about it is it has 32MB of flash, which means you can install a boatload of openwrt packages. You won't find that much flash on <$40 routers or even WNDR3700, and you won't find any more even on the RT-N66U Dark Knight.

I think that the 651 will benefit me more than the buffalo buck for buck in this case. I don't need a router per say -- I need a cheap Gbe switch with a built in WAP, for under 20 bucks the 651 looks very tempting.

On another note, you bring up flash storage for installing custom wares. Can I install different packages on a flash drive and plug it in the USB slot (If the router supports USB of course)?

However I have heard mixed stories on the reviews of 651, so I may be better off with a buffalo that is recognized by the community (and doesn't buffalo now use ddwrt as stock firmware?)

10/100 is painful for home networks. I'd probably snap if I had to deal with a max of 12MB/S.

If you transfer files or stream movies at home, you want Gigabit. Wired Gigabit.

At the moment the 100mbps is not breaking me, but I know with 2-3 more PCs and a server or two -- it will. So the Gbe connection is a must for me. That's why I am only considering routers with Gbe LAN, the 651 has that, but apparently has bad Wifi signal (which I care much less about, but it can't hurt to have strong signal everywhere in the house, there are a couple of laptops in my family and all of our Tmobile phones get perfect call quality over wifi)

Yeah you can do that.

You can also replace the flash chip with a larger one if you're soldering skills are up to it.

Depending on how hot that attic is going to be, you may not want to stick any more than a $20 router up there. You could stick the 651 in the attic with stock firmware for GbE switching funtionality, and get a 615 with DD-WRT flashed on it for wifi functionality, and use it down in the house as a wifi repeater, or WAP if you run cat5e to it.

Will ddwrt increase the wifi signal? As of now I have 2 SSIDs broadcasting - one on each side, but the first floor and second floor have great signal from one or the other- always.

ah, well if you have 2 other routers covering wifi already then just get the 651 for GbE, stock rom, wifi disabled. DD-WRT may or may not increase signal strength depending on the router. The main thing about DD-WRT is all the features and settings. You can manually set TX power but it's supposed to be ideal from default. Only way to find out if that is better is to compare that to your specific router w/ it's stock rom back to back. Where wifi is concerned, pretty much every router is better with DD-WRT on it if it's supported, except for the very bleeding edge stuff like 802.11ac etc.

Ok thats good to know, the other router - not the actiontec - is a wndr3300 that is ddwrt supported I just never looked in to it too much. Sounds like the 651 will be the best buy then, just need to get it connected to the room below it thumb.gif
