what type of wires suit 3-pin connector

Thread Starter
Hello there,

What type of wires suit 3-pin connector? I plan on modding some male 3-pin connectors for the fans
http://www.moddiy.com/products/Premium-Power-Supply-Modular-Cables-DIY-Pre%252dmade-Electrical-Wires-Kit.html
In wire thickness, they called it "wire gauge" right?

EDIT:
I did some comparison among some of the wires I possessed, wires awg doesn't correlate with wire thickness.

Thanks ahead,
X

it's just 12v dc, and generally less than a foot long, so you can use basically anything handy. I suspect it doesn't conform to awg sizes because it matters so little they don't bother. I've actually seen that nylon thread wrapped with metal foil crud that would blow up if it got anywhere near real voltage used.

Anything that will carry a current is fine.

Fans use so little power that wires are of less concern than power that MB can provide on the headers. Low voltage wires are different from higher rated ones only by the thickness of the insulation.
I would use as thin as 24AWG for basic fans (less than 0.5A), but step up to 20-22AWG for anything with some real power behind it just because it's like a $0.01 difference per fan for peace of mind.

In the UK the search terms you want for equipment wire are '7/0.2' for fans and '24/0.2' for molex/atx.

22 AWG is probly the most popular for fans and similar. 16-18 is good for more power intensive connections but you could probly get away with 18 for fans too, just would be a bit overkill. Make sure you get the Stranded type of wire with a UL1007 Rating. The solid single cored wires are more for soldering applications. Crimps and Molex connectors need stranded wire. And yes AWG absolutely correlates with the wire thickness, 16 is generally the thickest you'd see in a PC.
