Connecting two pc's to each other.

Thread Starter
Hello,
So i'd like to connect to pc to each other, via cable, so i can acces files from both computers.
Now, one of them is connected to the internet, and one is not ..
Is this possible?
if they both have gigabit lan then you can runa cat5e cable from one to the other,

one computers network card will have an ip of x.x.x.1 and one will have an ip of x.x.x.2

also when you want to get the files off your computer, you'll have to find it by typing \\x.x.x.x\(name of folder)\ in the windows explorer bar

If you want a direct connection aside from the normal network/switch based approach you'd just need an available NIC in each box.

Otherwise you should just be able to add it to your existing router's LAN ports and it would become a part of the network. If you give one a static address with no gateway you'll effectively have 'no internet', if that is as you intend.

ya, thats it.

why doesn't the one have an internet connection?

also they both have to have gigabit lan, if not you'll need a crossover cable.

Cause i don't want the on to have an internet connection, cause it's a storage pc, and because my ISP's router sucks .. whenever i have more then 3-4 devices on my router, the internet goes slow ..

you could plug that computer in to a router and give it a static ip address and then leave the dns numbers blank...

that will give it a network connection but not an internet connection.

No, this will not work. In order to connect one PC directly into another one, you would need a crossover cable (special kind of ethernet cable where the transmit and receive wires are crossed.) The NICs in PCs don't know how to talk to other PCs, only to devices of a different type (router, switch...). You're best bet would be to plug the two PCs either into your router, or get a cheap switch to connect them.

It doesn't matter the speed of the NIC (gigabit, fast ethernet). PC cards don't know how to talk to each other properly.

Err you dont ... this was once upon a time before autodection of cables rolleyes.gif

Youd need to manually set netowrking (if you dont have a 169 address), plug the etherhent into each machine, set up the routing. If you have cat6 crossover doesnt work if i rmber right
