Now that it seems like things with OCN have been smoothed out, it's time for this little update smile.gif

With the epoxy from last time cured it was time to bring the panels back to Brad's shop so we could wet sand, buff and polish.

Brad from Dirt Designs Graphic sits down with a cigar and some sand paper...

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01135-W640.JPG
He wet sanded the panels with 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit sand paper to get rid of the nibs in the clear coat and paint.

Next up was buffing it, to bring back a little of th shine lost while sanding

Bill doing his thing, while Brad does his.

What a difference. On the left is the wet sanded panel, and the right is the buffed panel.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01145-W640.JPG
Last step was to really shine them up using polishing compound.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01150-W640.JPG

Next up, I'll be working on wiring up some LEDs for these panels, and the case. Then hopefully get started on the install and watercooling parts.

Thanks for checkin' it out!

Well, it's been a little while since I updated, so here's a little update for now... Made a little shroud for to cover the PSU. It will also serve as a place to mount my SSD, since I removed the 2.5" drive mounting cage.

Measured and marked for cutting and bending.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01417_W640.JPG
Just used the workmate to make the two bends. Pretty simple, just clamped the piece with a scrap piece of wood on the bend line, then bent it using another scrap piece of wood. I've also marked it for the cuts yet to make, as I want it to be at an angle.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01419_W640.JPG
Little bit of a test fit here. Should do nicely.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01421_W640.JPG
And then I painted it Semi-Gloss black to fit in place.

Well, that is about all the pictures I have right now. Like I said, a little update.

Next thing on the radar will be getting the LEDs mounted and run all the tubing smile.gif

Thanks for following along, things should be moving a little more quickly soon! biggrin.gif

Ok, it's been an unexpectedly very busy last couple of weeks, so I apologize for not getting an update out sooner.

Things are coming together quickly, in the few times I’ve been able to make actual progress.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01437-W640.JPG

First, time for some hardware. Picked up an A10-7850k from Micro Center when they had them on sale ($129.99 is hard to pass up!)

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01441-W640.JPG

Unfortunately, Micro Center didn't stock any of the ITX FM2+ boards at the time, and newegg was out of stock on Gigabyte boards.
I ended up going with the ASRock FM2A88X-ITX board. All in all, I think it'll do alright. I like the HDMI in as an option.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01442-W640.JPG

The ASRock board comes with the crappy push in clips for holding the bracket on. No back plate like other boards have.
I used a back plate from a different motherboard, but it hit a few IC's on the back of the board.
I just used some washers and screws instead. Overall I kind of like the look better anyway.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01444-W640.JPG

I was undecided as to whether or not I'd use the WiFi that it came with, but decided to install the antenna posts anyway.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01445-W640.JPG

The wires were just long enough to let me run then under the motherboard, and in front of the PCIe slot. Keep it clean; I like that.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01447-W640.JPG

Next up, a little 3M 4010 Tape to install the PSU/cable shroud.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01448-W640.JPG

Plenty of room for airflow and cables to both find its way through.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01449-W640.JPG

And got that installed. Covers up what I wanted to cover up perfectly.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01435-W640.JPG

Now it's time to install some of the LEDs. I wired these up a few weeks ago, but ended up redoing most of them, as the side emitting LEDs ended up being rather fragile.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01443-W640.JPG

More 3M 4010 Tape to give the LEDs a little bit of an angle, to get more light into the side panels. Love that stuff!

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01451-W640.JPG

I also installed some LED strips in the two cross bars that the window/front screw into.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01452-W640.JPG

Testing it out, I think that'll do fine smile.gif

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01462-W640.JPG
Next time, I'll be doin' a little something with some goodies from ADATA, but more on that later.

Thanks for checking it out, as always. I should be able to get another update out in a week or so again. Back to good progress smile.gif

Before I had to pack everything up and move, I managed to get the front wooden panel finished and ready.

Since the window panel is smoked acrylic, I taped off where the window fits. Reason for this is because I didn't want the wood behind the window to be darker than the rest of it. It's only taped off while I apply dye to the rest of it.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01463-W640.JPG

First coat was 3/4 cup of shellac sanding sealer with 6 drops of "Vintage Maple" transtint dye.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01464-W640.JPG

I sanded back after the first coat, and applied a second coat that I cut in half, 3/4 cup shellac with 3 drops of dye.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01466-W640.JPG

With the lighting I had in my shop while applying the finish, the effect I'm adding is more noticeable on the edge. The dye soaks in further on the end grain (curly) part of the wood, and then I sand back the face grain to get it to lighten back up.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01467-W640.JPG

After the second coat dried, I removed the tape, and lightly sanded with 320 grit sand paper.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01469-W640.JPG

I applied 1 coat of clear shellac to the whole thing, let it dry, and then sanded with 600 grit sandpaper.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01472-W640.JPG

Applied coat #2 of shellac, and then sanded to 1,000 grit.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01473-W640.JPG

The final coat of shellac was hit with paste wax, applied with #0000 steel wool, and then buffed with a cotton rag.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01476-W640.JPG

You can see the effect that this regiment of dye, sand, dye sand, finish has. The curl in the maple is more pronounced now, especially in the right light. I could have gone a little heavier on the dye, but I didn't want ot make it too busy, with the side panels.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01479-W640.JPG

And fitted to the front, with the window installed. Overall I'm pleased with the result. Not using dye where the window goes was a good decision, the color is almost a perfect match between that and the dyed part.

Now, for the other big news. Last update I had posted a shot of some ADATA hardware... They had agreed to sponsor some hardware for the build! I'm pretty excited, and the 8GB XPG V2 RAM that they sent for the build goes pretty well with the build.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01459-W640.JPG

The tungsten gray color fits in well with the rest of the hardware, especially with the lighting.

Dancing_Iridescence_Mosquito_Mods_Lian_Li_PC_Q30_Wood_Ground_Metal_DSC01458-W640.JPG

They also sent an SSD, but you'll have to wait and see what the plan is for that wink.gif

Big thanks to ADATA for helping provide some of the hardware for this build! Stay tuned for some more, and in the meantime, a little leak testing biggrin.gif

Ok guys, here's the first round of completed case pictures. As it turns out, this isn't all that easy to get good pictures of (Who'd have guessed, right? tongue.gif)

I also brought it in to see Brian at Radar Studios for a couple of good pictures. This thing deserves it smile.gif

Can't wait to get the finished pictures back!

In the meantime, I'm going to try to take some better pictures with the equipment that I've got, and see what happens. smile.gif

You're welcome, I love the contrast between the window/what's inside it and the exterior. Will be waiting on the next batch of pictures! biggrin.gif

To say I planned it out that way, would kind of be a lie lol I think I mostly got lucky with the window and innards. I was originally going to air cool an old LGA775 ITX board with a low profile PCIe x1 GPU, and call it good. That was until the panels and front turned out better than I was anticipating, so thought I better do it justice lol I did use RGB LEDs, so I can change the color if I want, but the white just works so well.

Well, it turned out well in the end. thumb.gif
