Crossfire heat issues

Thread Starter
The top 7950 in my system reaches over 80c with 80%+ fan speed. Bottom card doesn't go over 46% fan speed.

I don't have a side intake fan for my case. Would a side intake fan blowing cool air over the GPUs like the Silverstone AP141 Penetrator fan make a big difference to my heat and noise issues?

http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?scase=&pid=281&area=en

Even with the side panel off, the fan noise from the top 7950 is too loud, like a hair dryer!

That may depend more on the type of cooling the cards have. If they are the blower variety, an intake would help a bit. If they are open, then exhaust would be the preferred action. I changed my fan to exhaust next to my 7870 XT and saw load temps drop 6F in a hot room.

That fan looks like a good move. You may want to look into the SP120 from Corsair, or a Gentle Typhoon as well. Grab one, run it both ways, and come back with some numbers! I'm curious to see what you come up with.

In that case, i'd go with exhaust. The top card is naturally gonna be a little starved for fresh air, and the bottom card not only get's its share, but just dumps all that heat back into the case. So yeah, egress flow on the side panel would help a bit.

Do you have any fans in the front of the case feeding fresh air in? Anything like a drive cage blocking it?

*Perhaps* more importantly, do you have any card controlling software running (Afterburner, Trixx, etc)? And have you tried flip-flopping the cards to see if the behavior continues?

I know this is a lot of stuff to try, but it could be a ton of different things leading to this behavior (you probably know this already, seeing how long you've been around here wink.gif ). I'd try all of this, in this order:

1. Front fan

2. check software (CCC, Afterburner, Trixx...)

3. Side-panel fan (out, then in)

4. flip-flop cards

Try this stuff out and get back to me with the results. I'm interested in what's causing this. It's a common problem with some of the amd stock coolers, but the frozr/classified/windforce stuff normally doesn't get *this* loud.

Good luck! thumb.gif

In my case with bad airflow I tried many different configurations and a side panel fan as intake blowing over the cards was cooler. I tried exhaust but it made both cards heat up. It only dropped temps by about 5 degrees or so, so it want that much of a difference for me.

You could simply try reapplying tim on the top card and see if that helps. I always get a good 5 degree drop from switching tim on the gpu's
