I just Cant break 3 ghz

Thread Starter
Hi, I am new to this website, but I have been around computers my entire life and overclocking for the past 2 years.

Enough, about me, I need some help.

About a year ago, I built a computer custom fit to me needs as a gamer. I am using an Asus A8N SLI mobo with an AMD Athlon 4000+ San Diego core CPU.

Since the time I have originally put the thing together, I have had it running at around 2.83 Ghz (from 2.41 stock). I decided I wanted to break 3 ghz. I have tried almost everything, different multipliers frequencies etc. I cant get it past 2.95 (semi stable, half the time it works half the time it doesn't). I cant figure out what I am doing wrong, whether I am just hitting the wall or not.

Usually I have it running with a frequency of 282 or 283 with a multiplier of 10.

I cant seem to push it past 2.96 ghz . I have had it on a number of different mulitpliers (9.5, 10, 10.5 11) all with according frequencies.

Any ideas on how to help here? Right now, my HTT is at 5x and I think it is stable. I have had it from 2x to 5x and its ok so far.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any advice.

Try 272 x 11.

And put the chipsets at x 3. You don't want it any higher than x 3 with an FSB of 272,you really wanna keep it below or as close to 1000mhz as possible for best stability

Also, what are your ram timings & speed?

I'm not an expert on the San Diego core but you're probably gonna need some high voltage to get there..........and a good cooler

Thanks for the info. RIght now, the voltage is at the highest I can get it to, its at 1.5something. When I get it up and running CPU-Z says it is using 1.6 - 1.616 volts (weird?). Anyway, it is booting up with the settings joeking78 recommended. Its not working.

Any ideas on this?

As for my ram, it just left it stock because I have had some bad experiences with ram and I dont want to screw with it.

I have Geil 2 x 1gb sticks.

Put the ram at 3-4-4-8 2T

There should be an option in the bios to put the ram on a divider. Put the ram on the 133mhz option for now

Alright, ill try that with the ram. But 1st, I put my CPU back to its old OCed state

Multiplier at 10x, Freq. at 283, PCI E Clock at 100 and HTT at auto.

Do you want me to put all the things to the options you told me to? Including the CPU and the ram?

yes.

Also where you find the HTT settings there are a few options there....like

Linkwidth and a few other things?

Ok, i will try putting it at that in just a minute.

I looked where i screwed with the HTT settings and there are no such "linkwidth"

settings.

Also, I am having trouble doing this with the ram, I cant find the divider option and dont exactly know how to set it at what you told me. I know how to OC Intel CPUs and video cards, not ram.

Alright, I am not going to touch the HTT anymore. It stays at around 800 something when i check it in CPU-Z when i have it set to auto. Can I leave it that way? I tried it at 2 x and my entire bios screen was scrambled. If I dont have to screw with it, I dont want to.

Is that ok?

I think the linkwidth option is only available on the 32sli.

Anyway. With the ram options go to Advanced > Dram Config > Max MemClock and select 133 mhz

Then in the same menu there is a 1t/2t memory timing.....choose 2t.

Leave the timings as they are for now

Try and boot with those settings and with the FSB at 272 x 11 with the HTT x 3

Also, disable PEG by going to Advanced > PEG Link Mode - Disable

This sometimes helps to stabilize an overclock
