The Red Mod on an XFX 6950 Problem

I was all ready to attach an Antec 620 cooler to my video card when I realize somethings wrong.

The Chip on my card is not only smaller than that in the pictures, it's also recessed. Meaning theres a metal frame surrounding the chip and raising it slightly.

I see on the spreadsheet that someone has done this properly. But it doesn't say how.

What should I do?

Also note is this still even possible without Dwood's bracket? since he isn't around anymore.

If the metal shim is taller then the core of the GPU, you will need a copper spacer shim. Most people use the EK shim.

Don't try to fill the gap with paste or a pad, it won't work well (if at all).

Where do I get the shim?

Actually one thing I noticed. The stock heatsink/fan setup is completely flat, which leads me to beleive I may not actually need a shim. But it it looks EXTREMELY close, should I use a shim anyways?

Also should I be ok without DWood's bracket? I saw alot of the people who did this using one. Or should I just use the techie's secret weapon, zip ties?

If the stock cooler is flat, then you don't need a shim smile.gif.

Dwoods bracket makes it easier, but it can be done with zip-ties. Just keep in mind it needs to be pretty tight, and it is a bit of a pain to evenly tighten the zip ties enough. Your best bet is to snug them down just enough to make contact working in diagonals (Top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left) then go back and tighten each one nice and firm in the same pattern

It may take more then one try, my first mount with zip-ties idled fine but temps skyrocketed as soon as I put load on the card, but the second time was perfect.
