phenom ii 960 black edition unlocked to a x6

Thread Starter
I have the opportunity to buy a 960 black edition that is unlocked to a six core. What are peoples take on this chip? i had a 965 BE. i liked it alot. i got it to 4ghz but then my friend gave me a 1090t. I'm in the market for a inexpensive chip to get a second rig going and think it might be cool. i thought about buying a fx6300 but feel for under a 100 dollars this is a good buy. My question tho is about unlocking cores and what not. Is that a not so smart thing to do. Or is it cool and works normal so i suddenly have a deneb x6. Let me know what you guys think please.

well I have never done it but I understand its perfectly fine except the unlocked cores don't show any temps or stuff,,so I heard a few people say,,thats a nice find,,,,,,i gamed with the 965x4 for a year or so,,,i changed to the 1090t then for a year,,,the 1090t and 6300 are basically the same,,except the 6300 will overclock way higher

if its a good price go for it

Core unlocking isn't a "bad idea" really, but you have to accept the fact that it's always a possibility that 1 or more of the cores won't actually work, or they will be unstable. You will have to stress test your system to guarantee stability with the unlocked cores. Use CPU-Z and see if it actually says "six cores - six threads" there.

As has been noted, the FX-6300 offers about the same performance, with the difference being that the FX-6300 will run cooler, use less power and also has the capability to overclock much higher than the Deneb/Thubans ever could (with stability).

i had mine for almost two years now. i bench it to 4.5GHz. i use it as Quad 4GHz in summer and as a Hex 4GHz in cooler times.

like others said, you need to check if it is stable, especially if you will use it for work stuff. even for gaming. the only time i activate the extra cores is when the game needs it like BF3 MP 64. BF3 SP, quad at 4GHz will work fine. i got mine paired with a 7950. at 1080, my AMD and Intel rigs use the same settings in all the games i play. Run Prime95 for about 12 hrs.

unlocked, the temps of the cores will not be shown in apps like HwInfo64. no big deal 'cause the socket temp will always be higher in this chip, which can be tracked. keep that cpu (socket temp) under 55C, then you are good.

i use about 1.4v for 4GHz hex and gets a score of about 7 in Cinebench. 8 at 4.5GHz.

here is quad paired with a 7970

love this chip even more than my i7.
