Overclocking a 955 Black Beyond 4.0 GHz

Thread Starter
Okay, so I got all of these upgrades, and I updated my signature now. The question is how can I get my 955 Black past 4.0 GHz? I tried many settings, everything as it is with the cpu voltage a little higher obviously, and the north bridge stock voltage+speed. Anytime I go past 4.0 GHz, I get BSODed. Then I tried raising the north bridge speed and lowering the cpu multiplier a little to get 4.2 GHz - BSOD. Then I tried only "overclocking" my RAM to 1866 (which it should be able to do looking at the RAM specs) and made the CPU stock - BSOD. Am I doing something wrong with OC'ing? Can my FSB not go higher than 200 MHz and CPU higher than 4.0 GHz? I'm pretty confused why I can't get this to work with these expensive parts. Someone please help.

Is that a new 955 or one that you picked up from someone else?

It's brand new like all my PC parts. I bought it on 6/14/11 from Newegg.

Okay, let's see how well I remember my 955. #1- You probably aren't going to get 1866 on a 955 C3. Some people can't even get 1600 as the IMC is only rated for 1333. 1600 is pretty standard. Increasing the CPU/NB speed to around 2600 MHz will give noticable benefits. it will probably take a bump in volts to get you there, probably around 1.25v. All chips are different but I could achieve 3.8 with 1.375v or with water cooling around 4.2 using 1.425v. Of course this was with LLC set to High so at load the volts were more like 1.4 for 3.8 GHz and 1.44v when running 4.2GHz. The Phenom II were and still are very much loved around here and you will find no shortage of "how-to" threads here on OCN devoted to getting the most out of them. Here are a couple places to get started. http://www.overclock.net/t/525113/phenom-ii-overclocking-guide - http://www.overclock.net/t/499526/official-phenom-ii-x4-9x5-oc-club thumb.gif

So do you think I can't get higher than 4.0 without water cooling? Or do I need a better cpu fan?

As he said, all chips are different. My 955 topped out at 4.35GHz on air cooling. It was kinda hot though so I ran it at 4.2GHz for 24/7 speed. But your may or may not reach this speed, although for a C3 stepping it should do it somewhat easily enough.

I actually just put my north bridge multiplier at 225 so my RAM is at 1800mhz now with 1.55v, and my cpu multiplier is at 18x (4.06Ghz) with 1.45v. Then I forced my NB to 2025mhz and HT to 2025mhz, and all of it works, but would that even be any faster since I'm down clocking those?
Leave HTT at 2025MHz, it is best there on your processor. CPU/NB should be higher if at all possible. You will see great performance gains up until 2600MHz, and smaller (but still significant) gains up higher from there. Most Phenom II 955's seem to average around 2.8GHz NB speed, good ones can hit 3.2GHz on air cooling.

But 4.06GHz is probably a good place to stop on CPU core speed and start working on NB core now instead. Most CPUs dont like both really high CPU and really high NB speeds, but they can find a nice medium in the middle for both. Usually on C3 stepping 955's that is around 4GHz core and 2.6GHz NB.
