4770K / Maximus VI Hero / GTX Titan

I have a build coming up for a fellow who has entrusted me with $4000+ to put together a system we have been discussing for a while. The main aim here is to achieve a strong all-round setup which can handle heavily modded Flight Simulator, and anything else he can throw at it. To this end a decent overclock on the CPU is a necessity so I'll spend a fair bit of time on that.

Here's an outline of the parts:

Phantom 630, matte black
i7 4770K
Swiftech H320
Maximus VI Hero
G.Skill Trident X 4x8GB 2400
Palit GTX Titan 6GB
Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD
2TB Seagate Barracuda
Corsair AX860
Sound Blaster Recon3D
LG BluRay drive
Wireless card
Win7 Professional 64bit
A couple of finishing touches by way of cabling and some subtle case lighting.

Ordering everything early next week; I'll keep this updated with photos as it all comes together.

Why not take a look at a Cooler Master V series 700W power supply?

For starters the supplier the entire order is going through doesn't stock them. Also I have read nothing bad about the AX 860 and had no issues with Corsair's "better" PSUs ever, so I don't see a good reason to change it.

Not meaning to be rude - that's just a random post to throw in straight off the bat especially since I haven't listed prices.

For reference, the list is already essentially finalised.

I've seen the coil whine being mentioned a good few times before, which apparently has been fixed on the CM V range PSU's.

Also, why not throw in 2 x 1TB WD VelociRaptors for just, y'know... just because. $4000 seems a good enough budget to be able to do that wink.gif

Coil whine is definitely an issue on these PSUs. I had to RMA two before I got a good unit. Plenty of topics regarding it floating around out there. Still a great unit if you can get a good one, but it is a possibility.

I'll see how it goes, I was under the impression that was just with the 860i models.

Velociraptors are totally unnecessary so they aren't going in smile.gif

I started this build a couple of days ago after quite a wait for the case to arrive. I got it booted up for the first time today and it's perfect so far although I haven't touched the overclock yet.

Here's a couple of photos of where it's at as of tonight:

There were a couple of little things I 'adjusted' along the way...

  • I wasn't happy with the DVD drive's silvery metal housing. I masked off the relevant bits and gave it a coat of black so it blends in nicer with the case internals.
  • Same story with the bright chrome bracket of the wireless card, I took it off and gave that a coat of black too.
  • The wireless card had a little green LED that pointed downward into the bottom of the case instead of toward the indicator aperture at the back. Luckily I was building the PC at a friend's phone shop and Chris was able to help me out with a white LED which he (very professionally!) soldered to the PCB and faced it rearward to aim at the little aperture for less stray light inside the case.
  • I switched the rear fan for a spare NZXT fan equipped with white LEDs that I had left over from this build.

Next on the hit list is that green 'GEFORCE GTX' logo. It looks so out of place that I feel it needs... adjustment. I'm not sure how to tackle this yet. I'll have a better look at the card tomorrow and see what my options are.

Worth noting:

  • There is no whine from the PSU whatsoever so far.
  • The Phantom 630 is an absolutely beautiful case to build into and the matte black finish is truly fantastic.
  • The Swiftech H320 is QUIET. Those black hoses are stunning too!

We pulled the Titan apart for some experimentation, hoping a colour change is achievable. So far it looks like it will be.

I removed the fan from the side of the case. There is no shortage of airflow and the side fan wasn't really achieving anything (the front intake throws fresh air right onto the GPU fan anyway). This allows me to trim back the metal around the fan mounts for a much cleaner look to that lower mesh section.

Was browsing your parts list and was curious about the Recon3D sound card choice. It's a weak card, especially in comparison to the SoundBlaster Z line. The Recon3D probably performs sub-par compared to the on-board motherboard sound on the Hero board.

Everything else is lookin' good. =)
