Windows 8 or 8.1 Preview for new build

Hey guys,

I will be building my new rig this weekend and I am not sure what exactly to install as far as OS goes. Since I am a student, I can get Windows 8 free for 2 years with my dreamspark account. However, I am deciding on whether its better I install Windows 8 or the 8.1 preview first?

I will eventually be upgrading to 8.1 once its released in October, but I am not sure what would be the best route now. I am referring to terms of upgradeability once the final version is released. Will 8.1 final easily be installed over the 8.1 preview? Or will it be easier to install 8.1 final over 8?

Thanks again for all your help!

Go with 8.
8.1 is an upgrade designed to install right over it.
8.1 preview is a bit of a headache, and I'm fairly certain you have to install a clean image of 8.1 over it anyway--not just a simple upgrade like with 8.

I'd only ever install a release preview like 8.1 on a non-essential secondary machine. Easier to build with 8.0 and allowing windows update to take care of it come October.

I put 8.1 on my main PC and my HTPC rig. I have had no issues, if anything it has made 8 flow better. However at work we tried this on a Surface Pro and it did not take so well. So as far as I have seen desktop with no touch capabilities, yes; with touch capabilities, not so much.

Edit:
I also have a VM of 8.1 and I do not have any issues.

My desktop I upgrade to the 8.1 preview from 8
My HTPC I built fresh with 8.1, was 8.
The VM of course was built straight to 8.1.

8.1 preview as far I know is NOT up-gradable to a legit version of the final 8.1 as with all other preview/RC editions. You are best to install 8 and do the upgrade to 8.1 when it's released.
