Upgrade/Overclocking help

Thread Starter
Hi I currently have a Dell Dimension 9150 with Pentium 4 D (3.2ghz) 940 dual core.

I have 1.5 gig ddr2 ram. And a dell dxp051 motherboard(ive run numerous benchmarks but still dont know what socket it is. I have recently fitted a Nvidia geforce 7900gs pci express with 512 mb ddr3 graphics mem. Samsung SATA 260 gb h/drive. etc.

I want to upgrade what should I next get?, maybe I should try to overclock the 940?, but as its a Dell I think I need a new motherboard/powersupply?.

But maybe I should just get a new motherboard and a core2duo chip?. But would I need a new case as its a dell?, or would the motherboard I have support the core2duo?.

So many questions!!! :-( I do hope you can answer them, I cant really give much more info about the system as its at home and Im at my parents. Help would be very appreciated, merry xmas.

p.s your thoughts on if my computer is ok or not as it is, would also be helpful so I know how good it is.

You could upgrade your mobo and CPU to C2D, but the first thing I would do is upgrade that PSU, the PSU's you get with Dells are poor at best. You will also find it a pain with the Dell Case as they use special PSU mounting, my mate had to hacksaw some of his case to fit his new PSU in his dell case. How much money do you want to spend?

Dell motherboards can't be overclocked at all in most cases.

I'm sure if you just used the Dell case it would be fine, but you'd need a new power supply and I'd highly recommend a new case. Don't Dell cases use BTX now?

Oh and your mobo is more than likely LGA775, because you're using DDR2

Pentium D is socket T which is used by the C2D also. You'd have to check what FSB your mobo can handle though, as C2D is running at 1066 and D at 800. I don't think its worth getting a new mobo/psu just to oc your dell, so i would suggest C2D or just keep the proc. You won't need a new case unless it is BTX or MATX, ATX cases will hold MATX and ATX mobos(not sure about BTX)
