GTX 770 Power Requirement

Hi, I'm looking at possibly getting a GTX 770 and I see the Geforce website says it requires a 600W PSU minimum. I have a BeQuiet Straight Power E8 680W which is a good quality PSU but it is only 80W over the minimum. The power supply is about 2 years old, would I have anything to worry about if I went for this card or will my PSU be fine as it is a high quality one (I heard a lot they list power requirements with low quality PSU's in mind)? Buying a higher wattage PSU is not an option so if the one I have would be risking it I would have to go for a 760 or something.

It doesn't have a +12V capacity of 72A because that would be 864W. The actual +12V capacity is 624W which is 52A, which is listed on their site. I know that you added the rails together, but those numbers can't be added up because that's not how a multi-rail PSU is designed.

 

Anyway, the PSU requirement for all video cards is referring to peak-rated PSUs. Yours appears to be a continuous-rated PSU which means that it should be able to deliver 680W continuously. Now, the +12V capacity of a typical 600W peak-rated PSU would be anywhere from about 408W to about 432W, or 34A to 36A. This is the +12V capacity of some good 400W PSUs. So you should have way more than enough power.

The GTX770 is supposed to require 42A on the 12V rail, so does this mean nvidia should really be listing something better as their minimum requirement? Or is that 42A requirement also higher than it actually needs to be?

That's a good question because 42A is 504W which can be the +12V capacity of some 530 and 550W PSUs. However, take a look at this:

With one GTX 770 under full load in their system, their PSU pulled 304W from the wall outlet. Their CPU was idling, so I can add up to 150W for the 2500K at 5 GHz. This would make the PSU pulling 454W from the wall outlet which means that if the PSU is 90% efficient while pulling 454W from the wall outlet, then the computer is pulling 408W from the PSU. The gaming power draw would be even lower, likely never exceeding 400W, and maybe not even 375W.

 

So, I don't know what they are thinking with the 42A recommendation, but I'm sure they have their reasons (it could be to protect their butts).
