Gaikai Tech: How will it work for PS2/PS3 titles, what hardware is being used to host?

Ok so we all pretty much know how x86 cloud gaming works: Massive servers running thousands of virtual machines, etc.

BUT: How will Gaikai's tech work with streaming PS2/PS3 games to PS4/PS3? How could that possibly be done? PS4 doesn't have the hardware to play PS2/PS3 games, and so on.

Is there some super secret x86 PS3 emulator out there that they developed? Could it be simply just a massive server farm of PS2/PS3 consoles?
I've been trying to figure this one out, because I don't really see anyone talking about it.

Does anyone here have a better idea here?thumb.gif

Gaikai is for PS3 as far as I've been led to understand.
PS1/PS2 would be emulation. PS3 can emulate PS2 no reason why a PS4 couldn't do the same.

Actually that's not true. The original fat PS3's had PS2 hardware inside it allowing it to play PS2 games. The slim version of PS3 could no longer play PS2 games, except for ones that were ported over to use PS3's hardware, available for download from the store.

This is not the same as Gaikai. Gaikai is launching for PS4 as well as PS3. Gaikai is what will *only* provide PS4 to play PS3/2/1 titles.

Which brings me back to my original question, how are they planning on doing this?

Wasn't aware of the emulation PS3 used for PS2/1 games smile.gif

Later generations of PS3s (I believe a 80GB and 40GB model?) had software emulation on them so the consoles could play PS2 games. I'm sure the same method will be used in the PS4 if there's no hardware present.

So with that being said, does that mean Gaikai will not be just a video over IP stream for ps3/ps2/ps1 titles? But actual game data will be downloaded and stored onto PS4's HDD?

"It has been officially confirmed that the Playstation 4 will not support Playstation 3 games natively. This means that any retail (IE disk-based) or digitally downloaded games will not be playable on the new console.

In a roundtable with journalists after the Playstation 4 reveal Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, elaborated further on the question of backwards compatibility.

In the IGN article linked above states:

"In a roundtable conversation with journalists, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios noted that PS3 games of both the retail and downloadable variety will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs won’t work in the new console nor will the games you downloaded.

There’s a catch, though: emulation. The PlayStation 3 doesn’t read PlayStation 2 discs (at least not anymore), but it can play PS2 games via the PlayStation Store in an emulated environment. Yoshida concedes that this is possible for PlayStation 4 supporting legacy PlayStation consoles as well. Indeed, the Gaikai presentation during PlayStation 4’s reveal touched on this “everything, everywhere” mentality. But for now, downloaded PS3 games won’t work “unless, somehow, some games work on emulation. And the easiest thing, technically, would be to make PSone games work on PS4 with emulation. But we’re not talking about our emulation plans as yet.”

In short, “There are two ways [to play legacy content]: emulation or cloud services [from Gaikai]. But native support [of digital games from PS3], no, sorry. It doesn’t work.”
Gaikai and Cloud Streaming

Based off of statements made at Sony's PS4 reveal event, it is believed that Sony will be using Gaikai's capabilities to provide access to games from previous PlayStation consoles through Gaikai's cloud streaming capabilities.[1]

At this point it is not known whether this will require players to re-purchase games they already own, although this seems quite likely.

Visit IGN's PS4 Gaikai Integration wiki to learn more. "

Any PS3, even the slim can emulate most PS2 games. Sony got greedy so they don't allow it unless you rebuy the game as PS2 classics. If you have a cfw PS3, you can convert the games yourself. So PS4 should definitely be able to emulate PS1&2 games, but whether Sony allow it will be another issue. Since they already said no BC this early, my guess is not.

I'm hoping at least they have either Gran Turismo 5 or 6 at least streaming or for digi download. It's going to be a while for a proper GT version to come out for PS4 from what Kaz has said.

So... Keeping my fingers crossed. But what I'm wondering, which is why I came here to ask these questions is: If Gaikai is a cloud based streaming game provider, how exactly will they be hosting and serving the Playstation 1/2/3/4 games exactly. With assumption that Gaikai will be simply streaming us video as we play and all the rendering is being done on their end... Will it just be massive x86 servers all emulating the playstation console generations?
