Safe to remove RAM headsinks?

I want to remove the heat spreaders on my G.Skill ram that runs on 1.5 volts. I understand it will void my warranty but is the heat spreaders really needed or mostly for looks?

Airflow is decent. It's a Caselabs S3 MITX case with GT14s

There are probably thermal epoxied on. If so, you might rip off the DRAM ICs if you don't know how to remove....
Once again...

This, just be careful & don't force it if it won't come off.

Photo originally posted by crabby at hwbot. Supertalent brand, g skill does usually use thermal pad which is easier, you should be able to tell if epoxy or pad visually.
