That's pretty much the entire point of so many things of this scale. It's a show of a country's wealth and technological prowess.
In response to all the people who think planes are going to crash into it: how do you think more than a thousand planes leave and land at most airports daily without incident, if the planes are just flying about haphazardly all over the place, on random courses through the sky? Planes fly set routes... most people know this much, don't they? And of ALL the places near an airport that they'll build this tower, they won't build it directly
in front of the runway, I'm sure. I also find it hard to believe that the people spending potentially billions on this tower haven't thought of the most obvious danger
It's most likely being built where it is so that it's one of the first things that tourists see. This is somewhat common knowledge too, but rich countries put a lot of money into their biggest airports so as to draw in more tourists and ultimately businesses.
It's not necessarily my favourite concept, but it gets boring when every time someone posts something cool, nearly everyone is incredibly cynical about it.Edited by dukeReinhardt - 9/12/13 at 6:57pm
