[VC] AMD Radeon R9 280X to replace HD 7970, features 3GB GDDR5 memory - Page 26

With the 7970 being 30% faster than the GTX 580 at launch at least it was only $50 more, a year and a half later the GTX Titan is also about 30% faster and yet $600 more than the aforementioned 7970.

That's the sort of progress? i'm sure even the most thick headed of Nvidia fans would agree is not acceptable.

50% more vRAM alone justifies the extra $50.

It (titan) is a flagship piece of hardware much like the intel extreme edition processors. Compare a 3960x to a 3930k, the 3960x is hardly any better than the 3930k yet it costs 500 dollars more, nearly double. Flagship things are never meant to have good ROI, much like anything else such as a car or audio equipment.

Care to explain the fx 9590? That was amds attempt at a flagship device.

That was more Roy's flagship idea it would've been good if it used excavator cores. (I would pay for such a ES/QS sample)
I concur a binned which still has the flaws of piledriver due to being binned piledriver is bad.

Yeah, its called marketing. Nvidia launched the GTX Titan as some special fantastical GPU to justify the $1000 price tag and it worked, that's what Nvidia are very good at.

AMD tried the same and it didn't work, in fact it failed catastrophically as the price for the 9590 was cut by more than half in no time at all (inclemently so was the 7990)

AMD don't have the 'brand strength' to charge silly money for 'any old product' by bigging it up. Nvidia and Intel do.

With a bit of luck AMD will never be able to get away with it so the savy among us will always get more for our money.

Everyone saying the 7970 being 30 percent faster then the 580 has me baffled so I went back and looked at the launch reviews. Turns out it was only 10% faster

I recon it was 20% at release still the drivers of the 7970 have made it so that it certainly is about 30% or more now.

there is enough evidence to prove that HD 7970 was 20 - 25% faster.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/49646-amd-radeon-hd-7970-3gb-review-25.html
http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/grafikkarten/2011/test-amd-radeon-hd-7970/10/
http://www.hardware.fr/articles/848-25/recapitulatif-performances.html

but the fact was the HD 7970 was very conservatively clocked and was an OC beast. on avg it clocked 1125 - 1175 mhz and at max it hit 1300 mhz.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/02/08/gigabyte_radeon_hd_7970_oc_video_card_review/6#.UjXfWn_3x8E

avg HD 7970(1150 mhz) vs avg GTX 580(900 mhz) was 35 - 40% difference. max HD 7970 OC(1300 mhz) vs max GTX 580 OC(1000 mhz) was 40% or even higher.

GTX 680 was 16% http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_680/27.html

6% faster than the 7970...

Its laughable looking back on that. biggrin.gif
