i7-980X, trying to hit 4.4OC, troubles ensue - Page 2

1.375V is the max rated Vcore for this CPU according to Intel. To be safe, limit it to 1.350V. Nehalem doesn't overclock like the new Sandy-B, Ivy-B & Haswell with 4.4 GHz+. It requires a bit more juice than them @ 4.4 GHz and the scaling of clock vs voltage is terrible after 4.4 GHz. So if you keep your voltage conservatively low. don't expect too much out of it to be honest.

VCore @1.325 in BIOS, monitoring Load=1.296, idle=1.248. I could stretch it a bit more but this chip is 3 years old and they really haven't gotten much cheaper. sadsmiley.gif

There is not a chance that you will reach 4.4 GHz with as low Vcore as that. If Intel says 1.375 they will likely have some headroom when that number was set in the specs. Do not see that your cpu will fry just beacause you'd go with 1.40 volts. I have been running mine @ 1.38 for a long time now and have not seen any degrading,
My volts are read with CPUID under load.

Only a 5C temp differential between cores is quite good, actually. It's probably not caused by TIM application either.

Most Gulftowns have major issues going past 3.2-3.5GHz uncore, depending on memory load. QPI/VTT voltages past 1.3-1.35v are also often less stable than those at or below this range.

Also, you only need 1.5x higher uncore than DDR rating on Gulftown.

You can go higher than this, and most will need higher to get past 4-4.2GHz.

1.4-1.45v load would be a reasonable limit on higher end water, 1.375v load should not be problematic on good air/CLC.

Stable running this, no errors in Prime95 for 3 hours now. Load CPU @1.344V, idle 1.296V. QPI/Vtt @1.34V. Tightened down the timings on the RAM and went back to 1333Mhz. (7-8-7/27, tRFC 80)

CPU temps are staying under 64C, Northbridge is starting to hate me and is edging up to 60C (57C atm). Liquid in the Kraken is raising about .5C/hr (41.3C after 3hrs).

Tried booting w/4.4Ghz, posted fine but as soon as load was applied BSOD, gave me a timing error message.

I think I'll give Prime another 2 hours to do it's thing and make 100% sure the timings on the RAM are stable, then bump the voltage another few notches and give 4.4Ghz another go.

Pushed for 4.4Ghz at 1333 on the ram, had to boost to 1.4V @CPU. Benched it for a few hours in Prime and temps were stable ~72C. I decided to clock it back down to 4.1Ghz as there really isn't a visible difference between 4.1 vs 4.4 and 7C of operating temperature just isn't really worth it for me. I did however get my RAM up to 1716Mhz w/8-8-8/24 timings, also OC'd my 2 GTX 465's to 750Mhz GPU clock and 1750Mhz Memory clock - INSANE difference with Farcry 3, now plays on Ultra no chop w/60Hz refresh...although my cards sound like 2 harrier jets are trying to take off inside my tower @ 100% fan speed wha-smiley.png Overall couldn't be happier with the results, thanks to everyone who helped out.
