Folding / Main Rig Won't Boot

Thread Starter
I came home last night and my main system (not my TC machine, but my best folding machine and main computer) was locked up. When it locks up, for some reason it locks up my whole network, I don't understand that, but whatever (if any of you have any idea why this is, I would be interested in knowing, but that's not my question).

I powered off the system by holding in the power button, waited for everything to shut down (fans to stop spinning, everything to go quite) and then I hit the power button again. The computer booted up, asked if I wanted to start Windows in safe mode, I chose "Start Windows normally" and it continued to boot.

When it reached the Windows 7 splash screen (the pulsing windows) it suddent shut off. It had never done this before, so I thought it was odd, but whatever. I hit the power button again, the lights came on on the MB, the fans all fired up, the pump on the WC system started pumping, but nothing else happened. No post screen, nothing.

I tried powering it off and restarting 3 more times before I decided something was really, really wrong. I disconnected the SSD, tried again, no dice. Disconnected the power on both GPUs, again no dice.

So my question is, I'm thinking I have a dead PSU, MB or CPU, but where would you start checking? I don't think a bad stick of RAM would cause it to not post, but could it be as simple as a bad stick of RAM? What do you guys think?

Interesting...

Do you have another psu to try?

My question is this: does the system need the EPS12V in order to post? If yes, then it sounds like a possible culprit. If no, then... well... something else smile.gif

my best guess is the first unscheduled pc shut down borked the bios settings and reset the sata controller to ide. when windows tried to boot to the ahci driver it caused the second shut down.

as for the no video at post, i'd clear the bios and have the monitor attached to the 1st slot video card. if it's the r2-d2 rig removing the secondary card at some point might be necessary.

multi meter on a 4 wire molex to test the psu in most cases. 1 stick of memory to trouble shoot the memory.
