Well first of all you can't really compare AMD and Nvidia architectures in this way.
But look at it this way: A 7970 outperforms a 7950 at the same clock speeds. Why? Because the 7970 has more computational units inside it. When you run more units at the same clock speeds as a fewer amount of units, the chip with more units will perform better since it can do more in a single clock cycle.
Similarly a 780 just has much more computational power on die. The GPU in the 780 can do more work for each clock cycle and thus has more performance at the same clock.Edited by Alatar - 9/14/13 at 8:30am
