i7 Extreme 4820K & MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) ?

i7 Extreme 4820K & MSI X79A-GD65 (8D)

Hello gents just a quick question regarding the above hardware..

I currently have in my main rig an Asus Formula Z and AMD FX8350 OCd to 5.0ghz using a custom Water cooling loop. I have however an opportunity to purchase new the above X79 hardware at an extremely reasonable price (cheaper than a 4770k and Z87 mobo). My questions are the following..

1. Is the 4820k a decent CPU for Heavy gaming, photoshop and video editing ?
2. Will i see any kind of a performance boost over my current set up ?
3. Is the above mentioned combination a good match, for overclocking(taking into account that it will also be custom water cooled)?
4. If i combine the above X79 hardware with my GTX780, will my XFX PRO 1000w PSU surfice, even with overclocking?

In case needed i intend to use my existing G Skill Ripjaws Z 16GB DDR3 PC17000 2133MHz.

I thank you in advance for your Time and Knowledge.

To beat a 8350 @ 5Ghz you would need at least a 4770K at 4.5+Ghz.

2. A 4820K is not what i would call Gaming and Multi tasking master, it's more of a Middle End CPU. A 4670K or 4770K is good though.

If it's Cheap, then get it, i don't think it would beat a 5Ghz 8350 unless you OC it to 5Ghz also though.

It'll be a good deal faster than an 8350. 4820k is a 3770k on X79 without heat issues. I'd go for it if it's cheap. Dunno why people on OCN has a huge Haswell fetish, it isn't too much faster than IB. I think you'll really enjoy the 4820k and it'll be much better in most games since most games aren't well threaded.

I just said the 4770K to keep the Haswell sharks off me lol

I was thinking the 4820K was a older CPU redone, like the GTX 570 is a better version of a GTX 480.

You will still need to OC some to overcome the the fact of 8 cores rocking 5Ghz lol

Not really. 8 cores that are only good in well threaded apps, most will benefit from superior single threaded performance. The 8350 is comparable to i5s in gaming, not i7s.

True, but i was kinda going for the Future idea, since the New Standard in about 3 months will be 8 cores. smile.gif

For older/most games as of now, you are defiantly correct. thumb.gif

Lol, just because next gen consoles have 8 cores it doesn't mean devs will instantly learn to use 8 threads or that games will even be able to use 8 threads, consoles will probably have a core dedicated to the OS and one dedicated to background tasks so I'm guessing we'll see 6 cores being utilized. And look at Crysis 3 with patch 1.3, it's an example of how Intel can still keep up even in well threaded games due to IPC. The 3570k and 8350 sit around the same performance, with the 3770k getting 20 more frames than the 8350/3570k. No doubt the 8350 is good at multithreaded apps, but games are not well threaded, the Intel provides a more consistent experience.

Fair enough point, but just wait, the Consoles *Should* push Devs to use more then 2 threads and i would bet by 2015, the Octo-Cores will shine, course if HAS-E rumors are true, we will have a 5930K with 8 Cores and 16 Threads @ 4+Ghz.... drool.gifdrool.gifdrool.gif

I would go for the 4820K setup, you already have a WC Loop going so clocking is def in the future biggrin.gif
I have a 4820K on a Rampage Gene IV board and I am loving it, although I am not a fan of watercooling, so I opted for a H100i in Push Pull config with 4x sp120 performance fans
and I can easily run 4.6Ghz, I have managed to boot at 5Ghz though thumb.gif

It is still early days with Ivy-E and we are still trying to find the max oc achievable with good volts and temps but as far as I am concerned its one of the best cpu's intel has made in the last 3 years.
