But when is a triple DDC setup a common phenomenon these days? tongue.gif

If he is slowing the pumps down he shouldn't have a problem. But 3 DDC3s @ full speed will have extremely high flow rate in any system. Those PCBs would be awfully warm.

Those 2 failure modes are worlds apart from a failure analysis perspective.

Heat would be easy to determine by monitoring the housing temp, or finding dead electronic components, while cavitation would be easy to see by visual examination of the impeller.

If this was such a common phenomenon, then I'd expect to see some pics of those compromised impellers.
D.

Exactly... I was also under the impression that cavitation can be squashed with enough pressure, which DDCs are amazing @ producing!

Being able to produce pressure is also why they can suffer from cavitation.

Cavitation is when the water flow velocity across the lowered pressure region is sufficient to allow the water to vaporize at the local ambient temperature.

When that occurs, the bubbles then collapse rapidly, causing the water to fill the now vacant space at supersonic velocity causing physical damage.

Cavitation can actually occur, not just on the impeller's curved surfaces, but in the intake and discharge tracts around obstructions if sufficient velocity exists.

The telltale indicator of cavitation, is that the pump sounds like it has little rocks in it.

I can say unequivocally that iv'e never experienced that, even with the MCP35x2 on full speed. Hell, I can barely hear my pump now that I have it properly decoupled with some foam rubber. I thought one of them had died because the drop in noise was so high.

I didn't suggest that triple DDC setups was the common phenomenon, I suggested that one of the three pumps failing is such setups was the common phenomenon within those setups.

Given that we see pics of just about anything WC related you can imagine, especially the stuff that fails, and that's just here on OCN, then it's reasonable to assume that pics of trashed impellers would be here if they manifested in even very small numbers.

The reason he has 35X's, is so that he can slow them down, and maintain sufficient flow rates in a large systems without a high db level.

The Dimestech bench is my first triple 35X setup, and I check the pump housings frequently, just out of curiosity.

I'm sure everyone's familiar with that setup, and I get 1.0 to 1.1 GPM (measured with a flowmeter) at ~3400 to 3500 rpm.

Maxed out, I get ~1.5 GPM in the 4400 rpm range.

I've yet to feel the pump housings get much above ambient.

Perhaps it's because they all have the metal EK housing, and sit in the airflow path to the rad fans, but with a sound hardware layout, heat isn't going to be a factor.

I just don't think skup has enough legitimate fear to feel he needs to change his plan to run the triple at speeds to give sufficient flow at pleasingly low noise levels.

Actually, I think you agree with me there.
