A disk read error occurred

Thread Starter
Yesterday my pc froze and so I restarted it. When I restarted it it came up with this
"A disk read error has occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"
When I follow the instructions I get the same message again. I am running windows 8 and have been running it for about a year now. The only thing that has change with my pc is that I overcloked my cpu about a week ago. Thanks for any help.

Ooooooooh... could be a tricky one. First, i would backup your data to another drive. Your best bet is to run a Linux live cd (eg Ubuntu) and see if you can mount your Windows partitions - then backup the data (If you cant do this then expect the worse!!)

After you get your critical data, you can begin to try and repair the disk. First, boot from your Windows CD and run a chkdsk.
If this doesnt help then you can try to format and reinstall.

Best of luck. thumb.gif

Dont worry. I think I have fixed it. I just took the battery thing out of the motherboard for about an hour and changed the sata cable used and the port that it was plugged into. Managed to get into windows. Any suggestions on how I could stop this happening again.

Ive been having this issue with my SSD. Its happened to me 3 times in about a month now. From what i understand, Its probably my drive going bad. Ive already cloned my SSD onto a separate HDD just incase it happens again and i cant bring it back to life. Im not sure if you are having the problem on your SSD or your HDD, but if its a SSD try this: turn off your pc, unplug your sata cable to your main drive, but leave the power cable plugged in. Then, turn on your pc and let it run for about 30 mins. After that, turn your pc off and let it sit for about 10 mins, then do the first step again. After you've cycled it the second time, plug everything back in and you should be good to go. This process essentially allows the SSD to "repair" itself by organizing files, ect. Its worked three times for me. :]

Good to hear that it was sorted. I think it was most likely the sata cable replacement. Had to do that a couple times myself actually. Just make sure you are using quality sata cables, and that your important data is backup up somewhere.
