Your Top 5 Most Recommended Game Developers

Thread Starter
Generally I'm a PC gamer but occasionally drift to consoles/handhelds. Usually I go after well known titles already but I feel there there are simply some games that are well made by themselves but escaped notice despite being made by decent developer/ownership brand.

So, I was hoping to tap on the shoulders of guys with more in-depth knowledge of these awesome game-makers and make you feel free to throw out your NON-BASHING opinions here. It'll help give me (and maybe others) some perspective on how these developers rank in general and keep a better look-out.

I know there are a lot of sites that rank games in general, but most reviews are biased. I figured the OCN community could be biased more similarly to each member than others.

Just follow this template so the details are quite clear:

[Platform: XX]
1. Dev1
2. Dev2
3. Dev3
4. Dev4
5. Dev5

My Personal List to-date

[Platform: PC]
1. Bestheda Softworks
2. Valve
3. Blizzard
4. Creative Assembly
5. ElectronicArts (EA)

Comments:
1. In terms of genre, I simply enjoy story deep might&magic RPGs. And although I never got to try the older version, TES Oblivion was the perfect game for me during it's time and again for Skyrim. It's those games that leaves a major game hangover due to the second-life approach.
2. Valve gets this from me simply for taking on DotA 2. But maybe the credits goes to simply IceFrog himself? I'm not much of an FPS guy which occupies most of their works... rolleyes.gif
3. Diablo series (my pre-TES favorite). Mainly Diablo II: LoD, but DIII was enjoyable 'enough' during the first 2 months of its release.
4. I think it's obvious that their Total War series is the key biggrin.gif
5. Somehow Need for Speed pushed me to add this here... Maybe it's because I don't have a car yet thinking.gif

[Platform: PC]

- Bethesda Game Studios
- Bioware
- Obsidian
- inXile
- Tripwire

Bethesda is one of the only mainstream developers keeping RPGs alive, they make industry-leading open world RPGs, DLCs that are actually worth the price with dozens of hours of content. Their games have excellent mod support and lots of PC exclusive features, contrary to what many people say they provide some of the best multiplatform games. And they provide the longest lasting games... 660+ hours and counting in Skyrim.

Bioware simply has the best resume, strictly looking at their games. Baldur's Gate series, KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, Mass Effect series, and Dragon Age series. So much content, and they provide industry leading story/character driven RPGs. Like Bethesda, there's just nobody else that fills this role. Even their worst game (Dragon Age II) was pretty good as a whole.

Obsidian might be the most dedicated RPG developer. They know what "RPG" actually means, unlike some other developers and many of today's gamers. They have a great track record too, with the likes of KOTOR II, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Fallout: New Vegas. I'm hoping they go back to making 3D RPGs that actually allow for third person gameplay, but publishers keep screwing them over and not funding some of their most promising projects like KOTOR III and an Aliens RPG.

Likewise, inXile is a worthy mention. They are the leftovers of Interplay (Fallout 1 and 2) and Black Isle Studios (Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale series). Does it get any better than this? Well... unfortunately they're stuck in the past making isometric-only RPGs. Seriously, just give us a third person option like Neverwinter Nights 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. Still, they're one of few studios making real RPGs these days. At least Wasteland 2 is 3D.

I don't feel too strongly for Tripwire, but they're real PC developers. Not just because they make PC exclusive games, but because their games actually offer a unique experience geared toward more hardcore PC gamers. They aren't dumbed down for the masses like console gamers and even most PC gamers now. Killing Floor, Red Orchestra 2, and Rising Storm are all some of the best games in their respective genres.

A year ago, I would have listed Bohemia Interactive. But they shafted ArmA 3 so that it's not a real sequel, and most of them went to work on some MMO-deathmatch crap known as Day Z instead. It seems they will no longer be a studio known for making one-of-a-kind mil-sims, but rather they'll be known for making kids' games instead.

As for Frictional Games, I just mentioned them for the sake of having a 5th developer. Their next title is going to be a multiplatform game opposed to a PC exclusive game, which worries me. But they revolutionized the horror genre with Penumbra (though Amnesia got all the attention for it), taking horror and tension to a new level. Great mod support too.

The MMO beats the crap crap. real crap.

1. Bestheda Softworks
2. From Software Inc
3. Blizzard
4. CD Projekt Red
5. Roberts Space Industries

I can't pick between those for who is best, they are all evenly the best in my opinion.

1. Obviously because of the fantastic RPG games they deliver.

2. For what other reason other than Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 2 biggrin.gif

3. Is a company i've always enjoyed specifically for the Diablo series.

4. Is one of the last few devs that really cares about their fans and delivers some serious quality games.

5. Star Citizen is looking phenomenal and becoming my dream game with every feature that they announce, definitely one of the games that i'm most looking forward to.
