I have. And imo 80 bucks is well worth it for a quieter rig (if he even feels the need to SLI).

Indeed. Surprisingly a single 460 doesn't do too badly either. With a solid OC he should be able to match the 470's performance and pull nearly 50fps.

I concur only for the reason of noise. However a small step in performance (460SLI in comparison to a 295) for an extra $70 with an upgrade coming after one year I can't justify in any other circumstances.

Wow I nailed that prediction!

FYI
My GTX465 @ 850mhz can play BF3 with all settings maxed other then textures turn down one notch and FXAA on Medium, and really only turn down textures as textures on vary high uses to much v-ram and causes frame drops. Gets around 45-50fps avg, and thats with a Q9550 @ 4ghz with only 4gb of RAM. So already my Overclocked gtx465 can match a stock gtx295, and thats with a game that has good SLI performance. Take SLI away and the GTX295 has nothing.

You could pick up a GTX480 overclock the hell out of it and get a overall better card then a GTX295. Would be the way I would go if you got a GTX480 with aftermarket cooling.

Get the GTX 460 overclock it to around 800-850 MHz and have nearly identical performance to your old GTX 470 non-overclocked.
If your GTX 470 non-overclocked was enough for you, then this 460 @ 850 MHz will be the same.
Avoid the 295, it is too old, too power hungry, too hot & too loud. and mainly doesn't support DirectX11.

460 sli scales very well in bf3, I had 2 460s overclocked to 900 on the core and it would play bf3 on high settings at over 100fps (never saw it drop below that), the only reason I couldn't go ultra was the vram limitation. In synthetic benches they performed almost on par with a single stock 670 (about 200 points difference in 3dmark11).

+1 gtx 295 hands down
I would stick with the gtx460, and save the money for when you upgrade your rig. They can overclock like mad and possibly even out preform your fallen gtx470. If you are going to leave the card out of your rig and talk about how cool it "was" back when it came out Id go with the gtx295. biggrin.gif
post #18 of 19
GTX 460 is the better option without a doubt. DX11 support. with a 850+ mhz overclock you can get close to the GTX 295. but since its single GPU, GTX 460 is a much better option.
