Calculating Impedance of "Multi-way" Speakers.

Thread Starter
How does one calculate the impedance of a two way speaker properly, or 3 way, 4 way etc?

I need this information because I want to create a simple first order high pass filter for two "midranges" and I would like to have correct resistance and capacitance values for my crossover components.
Say for example that the drivers that I am using are 4 ohm, 8 ohm and 8 ohm.

While a simple resistor/capacitor crossover will work (been there/done that), for just a little more money you can build something that will sound good.

The possibilities are pretty much endless.

What SQ do you require, what functionality so you require, and $$$?

Well, to be honest this is more of a cheaper SPL project.
I'm building this simple 3 way speaker to replace my sisters horrid 2.0 "system" as she calls it. So it wont be too hard to accomplish.
I was only thinking of a 12db/oct Filter to keep it a little more efficient than 6db/oct
My project budget is just about 200 dollars.

I will likely use a 6.5 In 4oHm Drive for the lower end:
This - not likely
This
Or this

and Two 3 inch 8 Ohm drivers that I already have, most likely in parallel.
In a ported enclosure that will look rather silly. When I get home I will have pictures of my "sketch"
Keeping it frugal biggrin.gif

If you're going to DIY the amplifier, I would bite the bullet and go bi-amp. You get a ton more power that way, and less crossover distortion.

One of these days, I'm going to do that...

Is that correct? I've learned a different formula for resistors in parallel - I'm trying to work out why it wouldn't apply to a speaker. 4 + 8 = 2.66 Ohm at the amp?
