Cant understand why my PC is lagging

Thread Starter
For some reason during gaming my PC will lag, my specs are decent and my HDD's are defragged on a schedule, and my GPU drivers are up to date. I can tell something isnt right as my laptop which naturally has worse specs can play the same games smoother than my PC (for example Amnesia A Machine for Pigs will constantly go from 60 to 30fps on my PC, but on my laptop it runs at 60 almost all the time).

Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot and perhaps find the source of the problem? (btw regardless of what my sig says at the moment no overclock is in place so I can rule that out of the equation too).

What all do you have hooked into your PC?

The reason I ask is, I once had an external drive that was hooked in via esata. If anything was written to the drive in the background while I was gaming, it would bring my pc to it's knees. To the point of locking up. Sometimes for a split second, other times for close to 30 seconds depending on what was going on.

If you've got a bunch of stuff hooked in, try unhooking everything you can and testing your game for a while. I'm leaning towards this as typically you don't hook up half the stuff to a laptop as you would to a desktop. Might also help to have resource monitor running, so you can go back and take a look. See what happens and let us know thumb.gif
