I'm starting to think my I-7 950 is Bottlenecking my AMD 7970.. Getting low fps in a certain game but gpu usage is %55

Hey there I recently bought a Amd 7970 which is my first ever AMD product I've always been an Nvidia fanboy smile.gif lol But I have to say I really really like this 7970 while I do miss the cuda cores for video processing the gaming performance is awesome and so far ( Knock on wood, hehe im superstitious) it has not given me any issues at all and runs like a champ. Edit: I should add again that I am LOVING this 7970.. For the price on newegg I just couldn't pass it up its the sappire model that has went on sale a few times I think for under $300 with free games.. $300 7970 and I got $120 worth of free games? heh yah I'm happy smile.gif .

The only issue is I recently went back to play Elder Scrolls oblivion for the first time ever the game is from 2006 but there is a crap ton of mods out so I threw about every Visual / texture mod I could find on it and it looks AMAZING for a game from 2006 heck even better then vanilla Skyrim. Thing is I am only getting 30fps max and about 20 min.. Which is preventing me from doing a let's play series on the game without removing mods because the recording software drops my fps to about a 14 fps min which is just to noticeable.

Looking at GPU-Z while playing my GPU Load gets to about %55 max , The highest I ever seen the Vram get to is 1.4Gb which should be fine since the card has 3gb of vram.

My theory is that my CPU is bottlenecking the GPU and it cant send the data to the card fast enough.. Could this be the problem? I've looking at my CPU cores with windows performance monitor while playing and its hard to tell 2 cores seem to be very very close to maxed while playing sometimes and others no cores are really maxed out.

Here are my system specs:

Windows 7, 64bit
12 Gb 1066 ram ( its actually 1600 but I can't run it that fast with the i-7 950 from what I can tell)
Asus X58 Sabertooth mobo
Intel i-7 950 at stock 3.03Ghz clocks
AMD 7970 OC with Boost at stock speeds.

Do you think my CPU could my Bottlenecking my GPU and thats why I am getting low frames?

Thanks

You have a motherboard capable of supporting a strong overclock. I would recommend pushing your 950 to around 4ghz and seeing if that helps. If it does, then you have found a CPU-based bottleneck.

I'm thinking about trying out a 3.8Ghz Oc without raising the voltage to see if that helps but my temps are to high at stock clocks atm.

Quick question, DO you think thermal paste can degrade overtime? My temps without even overclocking seem to be quite high.. my Cpu at full load gets close to 70c and I have a Coolermaster 212 cooler on it. I might take it off and check I sprayed the dust out of the Pc about 2 weeks ago with some air duster ( It was BAD ) but I think the Cooler might still have alot in it that I couldn't get to. ALso I am wondering if maybe the thermal paste has degraded since I've had it on there for almost 2 years.. Its artic silver MX-2 I still have some left to put on it again but the tube of paste has been sitting in my drawer for years I would say probably like 4 years. So I'm not sure if Its worth putting that paste on or waiting and getting a new tube from newegg or something.

The i7-950 is no stranger to high power draw. That chip can draw an insane amount of power compared to today's standards. A 212+ is probably going to perform acceptably at 3.8, but you're likely going to be stopped by heat beyond that.

add another fan and use Mx-2, whatever is left.

http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=FAN-MX2

i had an i7 950 with the 212, too, once and it did 4GHz at 1.18v. if my thuban at 4GHz can push the 7970, that chip can surely can.

Also get your uncore speed up, not just the core, to help alleviate any bottlenecks.

I just took the CM 212 Cooler off and looked at the thermal paste it looked pretty sad lol.. So I cleaned the Cooler and reapplied the thermal paste using the Arctic Cooling MX-2 ( Had the tube for years lol Used it when I put this rig together also) and Now my temps dropped by a GOOD margin.. Before I did this my temps were like 50c Idle and 72c max under full Prime95 load. Now my Idle temp is 39c and I have not run a prime 95 test to check full load yet but just by the idle temp I would imagine it will be much lower the 70c ( I sure hope lol)

I think I am going to take the CPU up to 3.8 or whatever I can get it to without really upping the voltage from default recommended. Should also help me get some more performance out of my ram also since my i-7 950 is not unlocked my 1600 ram is only running at 1066 so if I OC the CPU depending on how I set the multipliers and Bclk my ram will raise it speed to ( i think)..

I'm really curious to see how many fps I gain in my modded Oblivion considering my Amd 7970 is only using %55 of its load atm.
