i5 4670k Motherboard Suggestion for Moderate Gaming and Mild OC

Hey all,

So with the great help of some Overclock.net members in another thread, I decided that I would definitely like to upgrade to an i5 4670k setup from my old sig-rig. We were deliberating between which motherboard I should use, but after going over tons of thread posts, I am still unsure which one to pick.

I live right by a Microcenter (Tustin) and would like to take advantage of their processor/mobo bundle deal. I mostly play the Total War series games (hopefully Rome II), Skyrim (heavily modded), Red Orchestra 2 Rising Storm, Battflefield 3 (and hopefully Battlefield 4), hopefully GTA V, and various adventure games like L.A. Noire and Mass Effects 1-3. I have an MSI 6950 Twin Frozr ii, and wouldn't mind Crossfiring it at some point...but I'd prefer to get a better monitor before I do that. So that's my goal. I will probably do a mild overclock on the i5...something around 4 to 4.3 GHZ...on air.

I am looking to spend up to $150 for the motherboard, which is including the bundle discount. But member Stay Puft got me thinking about the Asrock z87 Extreme4 for its decent offering of features for the price...which comes out to $99 with the bundle deal.

With these parameters, and considering the other components in my sig-rig...what might you guys suggest?

Thanks in advance! thumb.gif

The boards don't really have much to do with the OC this time around. Even the weakest power delivery is enough to OC the CPU further than the CPU can handle temp wise. So don't buy a motherboard that costs more unless it has a specific feature on it that is worth something to you.

So that Extreme 4 is great also in the same price range http://www.microcenter.com/product/414819/Z87-G45_Gaming_Socket_LGA_1150_ATX_Intel_Motherboard has some decent features.

Don't forget with the prices at microcenter you can get a i7-4820K for $100 more than what you are looking to spend now and then not have to deal with delidding.

Not recommending that you do that... the 4670k is awesome but just want to make sure you know the option exists.

Oh and if you are gong to watercool the gryphon is a good board to look at since you can run the fans off an inline water temp sensor. Otherwise I'd stick with ASRock or MSI.

Ya the Haswell i5 isn't exactly the i5 2500k in terms of OC for sure. I'm not looking to do any high OC'ing, so I won't need to go for delidding or watercooling. Yet anyways. But that's good to know that I don't exactly need a $200 board to get what I need.

I hadn't even looked at that MSI board. It's actually only $15 more than the Extreme4 and has 3 years of a warranty vs Asrocks 1. That alone is almost enough reason to go for it. I'll look more into this one. Thank you!

Now I just have to wait for my Tustin Microcenter to get some 4670's in stock...

With the microcenter bundle price of 109 for the msi z87-g45 it seems like the clear winner. Its $45 off. I have the g45 with 4770k and it overclocks to 4.4 without trying. Its got 3 pcie slots for sli/crossfire, I like having the killer network manager. Good luck with whatever you choose!
